The Journey of Watercure USA TAKING A LOOK UPSTREAM WITH WATERCURE USA

Over the last few years, Watercure USA has grown immensely. Through our dedication to our customers and our craft, we’ve been able to double our business. But that didn’t start with my family or me. It originated at the sea with my dad years ago. My dad was a captain in the Merchant Marines working on oil tankers. He was one of the youngest captains in the

But over the years, we’ve had our fair share of challenges beyond my father’s health issues. As my role has transitioned from being a service provider to running more of the day- to-day operations, it kills me that I can’t see our clients. We have some clients who have been with us for decades and whose entire families we know. Every one of our service providers takes client notes, and I personally check in on the clients I used to service. The other challenge we’ve faced is the lack of information about the quality of filters sold at big-box stores. A lot of refrigerators now come with a water filter, but in the long run, they put more nitrates into your water due to the filters clogging up and dispersing contaminants already in the water and also nitrates that have built up over time. Regardless of the obstacles we face, the need to help our community still gets me up every day. If it isn’t apparent, I love to help people, and you would be surprised the difference clean water can have on a person’s life. It feels good knowing that Dad and I are still able to help people like he set out to do all those years ago. www.WatercureUSA.com -Drew Orton

Merchant Marine, and he even spent a year stuck in Russia during the ColdWar. He was gone for nine months out of the year, and after 16 years, he felt it was starting to take a toll on his family. At the time, I was 14, andmy sisters were 9 and 2. My dad thought he was missing out on seeing us grow up, so he retired. When he left the Merchant Marine, he was trying to figure out how to apply what he had learned as a captain. He knew all about water filtration fromhis time on oil tankers and saw the need for clean, filtered water as the bottled water industry was just starting to boom. I worked part time for my dad through high school and learned the ropes. The water filtration process fascinatedme because I sawwhat it could do for people. I always had an interest in helping people, which would guide the rest of my journey back into the industry as I got older. When I graduated high school, the need to serve became pretty intense, so I joined the Navy. After serving, I came home and worked a few other jobs to gainmore experience before joining the family business. A few years later, an opportunity

presented itself: I could help our community as a city firefighter. I couldn’t say no. However, I still wanted to help with the family business. I worked in four-day rotations: four days with the fire department and four days at Watercure USA. I would get a few days off here and there, but I only retired six years ago when my father got sick. It was at that moment I realized how much of a “three-legged stool”we were at the company. So, as my dad concentrated on treatment and getting better, I retired from the fire department to focus on our clients. At this point, I saw the growing need for our products and services in the area, which meant we needed to grow just as fast to meet the demand. For the last several years, our goal has been to double our business volume. Our suppliers think we’re nuts at times, but we’ve been able to accomplish our goal year in and year out. People might ask me about the kinds of changes and challenges we’ve encountered since 1986, the year we founded the company.

YOUR GUIDE TO SPRING- GREENING

It takes a special kind of person to enjoy spring- cleaning. For most of us, the satisfaction of a clean house doesn’t quite outweigh the hours of scrubbing, sorting, and slogging through heaps of unnecessary stuff. If you’re struggling to find the motivation to start your spring-cleaning, try flipping the paradigm: Instead of spring-cleaning, think of what you’re doing as spring- greening , and make some eco-friendly swaps along the way. Here are a few ideas to get you started. 1. Swap your plastic spray bottles for bulk or DIY cleaning products. According to a Statista report, in 2019, the household cleaners market was worth more than $31 billion, and it’s continuously growing. You can save money on cleaning supplies by taking the green route. When your current stock runs out, try buying bulk cleaners or making your own. Both options will save plastic because you can reuse your bottles, and they can help you avoid the harmful chemicals found in most cleaners. Visit UnderATinRoof.com and read the blog post“ZeroWaste Cleaning Supplies + Recipes”to get started. 2. Explore alternative laundry detergents. If you’re used to using a plastic jug of liquid laundry detergent, it’s time to step out of your

comfort zone. This spring, try exploring greener alternatives like plant-based bulk laundry powder (Molly’s Suds is an excellent source). Or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even try adding all-natural cleaners like soap nuts or English ivy to your laundry loads. For more on the former, search“soap nuts” on 1MillionWomen.com, and read up on ivy detergent at Permacrafters.com/English-Ivy- Laundry-Detergent. Paper towels are a mainstay in American homes, but do we really need them when a good old- fashioned rag can do the job? According to the Ocean Conservancy, 13 billion pounds of paper towels are tossed in the U.S. each year! This spring, quit paper towels and keep a stash of dish rags under the sink to do your dirty work. When you’re cleaning out your closet, you can even cut up old T-shirts and add them to your rag stash! If you’re brave, try giving up tissues, too — an old-school hanky does the trick. If you’ve made all three of these swaps, don’t stop there! To continue your green journey, visit any of the blogs mentioned above and start browsing. 3. Say goodbye to paper towels.

WHY HARD WATER IS HARD ON YOUR BODY

When you get out of the shower, how does your skin feel? Does it feel silky smooth or dry and itchy? If it’s the latter, you may have hard water. Hard water contains dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. If you have hard water, you will find white soap scum all over your bathroom fixtures. If you notice hard water in your home, here is what you need to know. One of the first things you will find is that it can clog up your plumbing and showerhead, reducing your water pressure. In addition to clogging your plumbing, it can also clog your pores, which can lead to breakouts and irritating skin conditions like acne or eczema. The minerals in hard water strip moisture from your skin, preventing natural oils in your body from doing their job. This is why your skin feels dry and itchy after bathing. Not only that, but it’s been found that the minerals in the water form

free radicals, which damage healthy skin cells. This results in your skin aging faster, potentially making you look older than you are. Alternatively, soft water does not have these minerals and can quickly form a sudsy lather, which makes it easier to wash away. Due to this, you won’t be left with pore-clogging residue all over your body. While soft water isn’t a cure for any skin disease, it can help you avoid irritation. In one study, it was found that schoolchildren who lived in areas with hard water were 50% more likely to suffer from eczema. Hard water may not cause skin conditions, but there is a significant amount of evidence indicating it aggravates them. With soft water, you’re less likely to clog your pores and dry out your skin, allowing you to have the beautiful, clear skin you want.

If you find any of the signs of hard water, feel free to reach out anytime. We will help you find the right filtration system for your home or check the filter you have!

We have used their reverse osmosis unit for a year in our old house and just got a new system installed in our new house. Drew and Ann are fantastic people to work with. They are both very knowledgeable and accommodating with scheduling. Drew really knows his stuff regarding filtration systems, and despite a few glitches with our new house, he exceeded our expectations. We can’t speak highly enough of them and would recommend them to anyone looking for a fantastic water filtration systemwith outstanding customer service!” – James Albert “In one word: Amazing! Drew is awesome, professional, personable, and knows his stuff! We had such a rough time with our new build and having extremely bad well water was just the icing on the cake. Drew and Ann were a breath of fresh air! Awesome to work with, knowledgeable, and just nice people, which you don’t get a lot of anymore. They truly care about their customers and their issues, AND they are affordable! Not only was Drew the best out of the four different companies we looked at, but he was also the most affordable, which was huge for our current situation. March Madness Fun for the Whole Family

Whose Picks Will Go All the Way?

MARCH MADNESS FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

One of the greatest things about March Madness is that you don’t have to be a huge college basketball fan to get in on the fun. Kids of all ages can fill out brackets — or have a parent fill one out for them— and watch their picks duke it out on the court. While healthy competition among family members can be fun all on its own, check out the following tips if you’re looking to go the extra mile and reap as much fun from March Madness as you can. TURN EACH GAME INTO AN EVENT. Not every kid may like watching basketball, but if they fill out a bracket, then they might gain at least a passing interest in who will win each game. To elevate their interest, turn each March Madness matchup into a little party. It doesn’t have to be fancy; make fun snacks to eat while you watch or bet pieces of candy on who will

have the most points to create great family bonding opportunities.

REWARD THE WINNERS WITH PRIZES. Offer prizes to each round winner as well as the overall bracket winner to get the whole family involved. Small prize ideas for each round can include a homemade dinner of the winner’s choice, a week’s supply of their favorite snack, or a coupon for getting out of a chore. Whoever wins the whole tournament (or makes it the furthest with their bracket) deserves a bigger reward. Offer them the chance to see a movie of their choice in theaters or to eat a meal at their favorite restaurant. CREATE A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY. Learning math or geography might not sound like your child’s idea of fun, but it can be when they

learn it through the lens of March Madness. See if your kids would be interested in understanding the inner workings of the ranking system or studying where some of the qualifying colleges are located on a map of the United States. They may find it so interesting that they don’t even realize they’re learning valuable skills.
