Long days and warm weather mean more motorcyclists will be back on the road. Last year, there were 264 motorcyclist fatalities on the roads of Georgia, up from 137 fatalities in 2014. That’s an increase of 48 percent in just four years. It’s the responsibility of all drivers on the road to help reduce accidents and collisions. Here are some strategies to make our roads a little safer. Tips for Motorcyclists • Wear your gear. Long sleeves and pants made of thick materials, boots, gloves, and a helmet can make a huge difference in a crash. You should also make sure your gear and your bike have reflective elements so you can be easily spotted by drivers. Tips to Make Georgia Roads Safer Look Twice for Motorcyclists • Avoid bad weather when possible. It’s not always possible to stay off the streets during rain or high winds, so make sure you know safety strategies for riding in dangerous weather conditions. • Stay out of blind spots and door zones. A lot of accidents occur when drivers switch lanes, so try to stay ahead of vehicles and within a driver's line of sight. You should also avoid the area between traffic lanes and parked cars where a door can open unexpectedly and cause a collision. • Be cautious at intersections. Half of all crashes occur at intersections. Stay alert for inattentive drivers.

Tips for Drivers According to stats from State Farm, “Collisions with

motorcycles are usually the car driver's fault.” Car and truck drivers can reduce the odds of a motorcycle accident occurring by following this advice. • Stick to the four-second rule. Maintain a driving distance of at least four seconds between your vehicle and a motorcycle. Institute for Highway Safety found that 44 percent of two- vehicle, fatal motorcycle accidents were the result of a car turning left while a motorcycle went straight. If you see a motorcycle at an intersection, try to make eye contact with them before turning. • Check your blind spots. It’s easy for small motorcycles to slip into your vehicle's blind spot. Check twice before changing lanes. Due to the inherent risk that comes with riding a motorcycle, people assume that most accidents are caused by the motorcyclist. For this reason, it can be difficult for a motorcyclist to claim the compensation they deserve after an accident. If you’re a motorcyclist who has been injured in an accident, be sure you have a team who is going to fight for you by calling 404-596-8044. • Look both ways, and then look again. The Insurance
