MAY 2019

HELP US CELEBRATE GREAT TEACHERS CHAMPIONS IN THE CLASSROOM

The first full week in May is Teacher Appreciation Week. I want to take a moment to shout out the public school teachers out there who work hard to educate our kids every day. I’m a big supporter of public education; I attended public school myself back in North Carolina. Public education really is the great equalizer: It’s an opportunity for everyone, regardless of their circumstances, to learn and improve themselves. This year, I want to really celebrate our local teachers, which is why we’ve launched our Champions in the Classroom: Teacher of the Year Contest.

Murray, who taught history; and Dr. Lassiter, who taught psychology and statistics. Of all the teachers I had, Dr. Lassister was one of my top favorites. I am horrible at math, but I hit it out of the park in Dr. Lassiter’s statistics class. I got an A+ on every exam thanks to the way Dr. Lassister taught the material and engaged with our class.

When I moved on to law school, my favorite teacher was Professor Creswell, who was an excellent torts professor. Torts was one of my favorite subjects in law school, and Professor Creswell was always really prepared. You could tell he was passionate about teaching, and that made the students passionate about learning. Since my daughter started kindergarten, I’ve seen the importance of teachers in a new light. My daughter’s teacher spends more time during the day with her than I do. It’s important that this person be responsible for taking care of her and making sure she’s okay. Additionally, I really love seeing my daughter come home excited because she learned something new at school that day. Having a teacher who loves their subject and can really engage with their students is important no matter how old the students are. If you know an amazing teacher who works at a public school in Cobb County, we invite you to nominate them as Teacher of the Year. Visit TheChampionFirm.com/ champions-in-the-classroom to cast your vote. Voting ends on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, and the teacher with the most votes will be named the winner.

Our law firm wants to recognize a truly special public school teacher in Cobb County chosen by the members of the community. The winning teacher will receive $2,500, and their school will also receive $2,500. Nominations are open, and any teacher who works at a public school in Cobb County is eligible. This is just our way of saying thank you. It’s no secret that teachers are extremely undervalued, by both our society and the students they teach. To be honest, I couldn’t tell you the names of some of my high school teachers without breaking out the yearbook. At the time, I didn’t recognize how hard they worked. Fortunately, becoming a lawyer meant I had to attend school for a while after graduating from high school. Many of my favorite teachers were in college and law school. I attended Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where my dad happened to be a professor. My dad wasn’t one of my teachers, but I had a lot of great professors, like Dr. Ziegler, who taught political science; Dr. “OUR LAW FIRM WANTS TO RECOGNIZE A TRULY SPECIAL PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER IN COBB COUNTY CHOSEN BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.”

Here’s to the great teachers out there. Thank you for all the work you do.

3 Ways a Virtual Assistant Can Help Get Your Kids Ready for School ‘HEY, ALEXA!’

Even though parents and kids everywhere are getting close to celebrating the last day of school this year, school day mornings are difficult no matter what season it is. Do you feel like you've run a marathon by 9 a.m. every day? Rest assured that you're not alone. Mornings are often the most hectic and stressful part of a parent's daily schedule. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive and popular device that can help take some of the pressure off your morning routine and get your kids to the bus on time: Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa! Alarms of All Kinds You can place an Echo Dot in your kid's room and set an alarm that wakes them up to the weather report, a standard alarm sound, or their favorite tunes. You can also program

Alexa to turn on a compatible bedside lamp so they wake up to light instead of sound, which offers a more calming way to wake up. If your kid decides to catch a few more z’s and ignore their alarm, you can use some of Alexa’s other features, like Drop In and Intercom, to start a two-way conversation or send announcements to all the kids’ rooms in the house. Reminders and Lists Alexa can also help you check off items from your family’s morning to-do lists to minimize the chaos of weekday mornings. You can create reminders to pack lunches or grab homework, and then all you have to do is ask, “Alexa, what are my reminders?” She will run down the list, so you can hit the road early without the nagging feeling that you left something behind. Make It a Game “Out the Door” is an interactive Alexa game that turns getting ready for school into an adventure for younger children. Each day, kids are given a new superpower and have to defeat a different creature as they complete "missions," which include tasks like brushing their teeth and getting dressed. It makes the process of getting ready for school exciting and gives kids an incentive to fulfill their responsibilities. If you don’t already have an Echo Dot, you can find them at most major retail stores. Make your mornings less stressful by starting with “Hey, Alexa” and going from there.

What Parents Need to Know About This Media Platform IS YOUR TEEN WATCHING TWITCH?

Twitch Broadcasters Solicit Donations While Twitch is free to watch (with ads), the site allows viewers to donate to their favorite

For many parents, the idea of watching someone else play a video game sounds incredibly dull. But as the rise of the streaming site Twitch.tv has shown, young people love cheering on their favorite gaming broadcasters — to the tune of 140 million monthly viewers. Many of those tuning in are teenagers, and a survey by the Washington Post found that over half of the participants ages 14–20 watch at least some streamed video game content. If your teen is one of these viewers, here’s what you need to know. Twitch Is Live Twitch differs from video sites like YouTube because the content is being broadcast live. This means it can’t be filtered as reliably, and even the most family-friendly broadcasters might slip in the occasional swear word or make an inappropriate comment. There is also a live chat feature, meaning your teen can communicate with anyone watching the same stream. This feature can be switched off, but it’s still a good idea to talk to your teen about online safety and the importance of not revealing personal information to strangers.

broadcasters directly or become paid subscribers. Many broadcasters offer subscriber-only streams, shoutouts, and other bonus content that can make it tempting for impressionable viewers to open their wallets (or those of their parents). It’s best to make sure your teen’s account isn’t tied to any bank information. Why Your Teen Watches Twitch There are many reasons teens watch Twitch streams. If they are into competitive video games like “Fortnite” or “Apex Legends,” they may want to watch skilled streamers to pick up tips and tricks. They could be a fan of an esports team and want to root them on during streamed tournaments, just like you would a football or basketball team. They may even just want to get a feel for what a game is like before they decide to spend their allowance on it. Talking to your teen about the kinds of streams they watch can help you better understand what they get from this new form of media.

Long days and warm weather mean more motorcyclists will be back on the road. Last year, there were 264 motorcyclist fatalities on the roads of Georgia, up from 137 fatalities in 2014. That’s an increase of 48 percent in just four years. It’s the responsibility of all drivers on the road to help reduce accidents and collisions. Here are some strategies to make our roads a little safer. Tips for Motorcyclists • Wear your gear. Long sleeves and pants made of thick materials, boots, gloves, and a helmet can make a huge difference in a crash. You should also make sure your gear and your bike have reflective elements so you can be easily spotted by drivers. Tips to Make Georgia Roads Safer Look Twice for Motorcyclists • Avoid bad weather when possible. It’s not always possible to stay off the streets during rain or high winds, so make sure you know safety strategies for riding in dangerous weather conditions. • Stay out of blind spots and door zones. A lot of accidents occur when drivers switch lanes, so try to stay ahead of vehicles and within a driver's line of sight. You should also avoid the area between traffic lanes and parked cars where a door can open unexpectedly and cause a collision. • Be cautious at intersections. Half of all crashes occur at intersections. Stay alert for inattentive drivers.

Tips for Drivers According to stats from State Farm, “Collisions with

motorcycles are usually the car driver's fault.” Car and truck drivers can reduce the odds of a motorcycle accident occurring by following this advice. • Stick to the four-second rule. Maintain a driving distance of at least four seconds between your vehicle and a motorcycle. Institute for Highway Safety found that 44 percent of two- vehicle, fatal motorcycle accidents were the result of a car turning left while a motorcycle went straight. If you see a motorcycle at an intersection, try to make eye contact with them before turning. • Check your blind spots. It’s easy for small motorcycles to slip into your vehicle's blind spot. Check twice before changing lanes. Due to the inherent risk that comes with riding a motorcycle, people assume that most accidents are caused by the motorcyclist. For this reason, it can be difficult for a motorcyclist to claim the compensation they deserve after an accident. If you’re a motorcyclist who has been injured in an accident, be sure you have a team who is going to fight for you by calling 404-596-8044. • Look both ways, and then look again. The Insurance
