11 th Herb’s Pond Rocket Tournament

The 11 th annual Herb’s Pond Rocket Tournament brought in a great crowd throughout the event, March 20 and 21, at the Vankleek Hill Community Centre. The annual event was organized by Jason Jackson this year, raising $1,700 to go toward athletic equipment for Pleasant Corners Public School. “All themoney goes back into the community,” said Jackson. “It’s the biggest weekend of the year for the community centre and a very good tournament for the community.” Jackson started the event with two friends, Derek and Danny Duval, in 2005. The three had opened a sports store called Pond Rocket Sports in the summer of 2004 and wanted to do something for the community. The annual tournament donates funds raised to youth projects and schools in the area to help defray the costs of sports for local youngsters. Last year, approximately $1,500 was donated to the Jump Start program to help underprivileged youths get involved in sports. The tournament brought in 16 teams and more than 200 players from as far as the U.S. “We get some former NHL players like DanMcGillis who played several years with the NHL,” said Jackson. “He’s played in the tournament for quite a few years. Last year’s winning teamwas the K-Town Krush fromKingston.” Games began Friday, March 20, from 5 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. and continued Saturday, March 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and were followed by an after party featuring the Gilles Arsenault Band. “The after party was a huge success. I have never seen the community center so packed.The band was
really good,” said Jackson. “They had people up on the dance floor till the arena staff shut down the party.” The winning teams of this year’s tournament are for the open division the defending champs, the K-Town Krush, winning 6-4 over Pioneer Seed; in the recreational division, The Atlantic won 6-1 over The Hangover; and in the Howes FarmEquipment Old Timers Division, Mode Excavation beat out Ravcon 9-0.
