CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

Wherever you are today - welcome to Penfolds Victoria Derby Day at Flemington. It ismyfirst opportunityasChairman towelcomeyou to the2021Melbourne Cup Carnival. I want to thank all racing supporters and everyone in the racing industry, and especially at the VRC and Flemington, for your extraordinary dedication in keeping our sport alive and flourishing during many months of community lockdown this year and last. We are proud that we have been able to work with health professionals and essential workers to play our part in promoting community wellbeing, while ensuring that the show could go on and that equine welfare is protected. I would also like to thank our VRC members for their loyalty over the last 18 months. This has extended beyond financial support, to many wonderful messages of encouragement and optimism to ensure we continued our unwavering focus to get back to Headquarters as soon as we can. Today starts a new chapter at Flemington. In the long history of our greatest classic for three-year-old stayers, we celebrate a new partnership, presenting for the first time the Penfolds Victoria Derby with prizemoney of $2 million. Penfolds’ parent company, Treasury Wine Estates, has been a partner with the VRC for over four decades and we were delighted to announce this new relationship with Penfolds in July this year. Derby Day always opens the Melbourne Cup Carnival with elegance and the highest quality racing. Today a total of $9.1 million is on offer in prize money and bonuses. Every race on the card is at Group standard—four at the exalted Group One level—including, of course, the feature Penfolds Victoria Derby. Always a highlight of Derby Day is the Lexus Hotham Stakes run over 2500 metres. The result could shape next Tuesday’s Lexus Melbourne Cup with the winner receiving a ballot free exemption into our greatest race.

We look forward to progressively welcoming crowds of racegoers back to Flemington in the coming days, weeks and months. Penfolds Victoria Derby Day heralds the new beginning. Please enjoy the day.

A STORY FROM THE VAULT

HOW THE DERBY BECAME DERBY DAY BY ANDREW LEMON

The 2021 Penfolds Victoria Derby writes a new chapter in the grand history of Flemington’s most coveted classic for three-year-old stayers. Derby Day at Flemington is, simply stated, Australia’s most anticipated race day of the year. With the racecourse at its glorious best, and with top-class racing across the card, it is the day the party begins. Consider the illustrious roll call of winners of the Victoria Derby itself. The list is graced by equine giants, the likes of Wallace, Manfred, Sailor’s Guide, Sky High and Tobin Bronze, Dulcify, Red Anchor and Mahogany. In a timeline stretching from Lantern to Efficient, seventeen Victoria Derby champions have also won a Melbourne Cup. The Victoria Derby pays homage to one of the world’s oldest classics, the English Derby first run at Epsom in 1780 – eight years before the First Fleet arrived in New South Wales. England’s Derby Day was to Londoners as Melbourne Cup Day became to Australians, the great racing holiday of the year. For us, Penfolds Victoria Derby Day is just the beginning. It declares the Melbourne Cup Carnival open. The Epsom Derby distance is a mile and a half. So too was the Victoria Derby until Australian racing converted to metrics in 1972. The nearest round number is 2400 metres, so this meant moving the starting barriers fourteen metres closer to the first turn. Dayana won that year, but in 1973 for the sake of fairness and safety the VRC extended the distance to 2500 metres, with champion Taj Rossi the winner. Officially the Penfolds Victoria Derby is open to three-year-old colts, geldings and fillies, at set weights. Fillies have a two-kilogram allowance. In practice they rarely contest the race, connections aiming instead for the Kennedy Oaks. Curiously, fillies won several runnings of the Victoria Derby in the colonial era. Briseis fromGeelong famously took the Derby, Melbourne Cup and Oaks in the space of six days. But it is now nearly a century since a filly triumphed in the Victoria Derby – Frances Tressady in 1923. The last to run a place was Born To Be Queen, finishing third as favourite in 1985.

18

While hot favourites and champions have won the Victoria Derby, so too have longshots, most notably the South Australian colt Rebel Raider in 2008, ridden by Clare Lindop claiming the race at 100/1. Derby Day at Flemington is treasured, over and above the race itself. In 1925, a reporter from distant Broken Hill said, ‘I always think that Derby Day is the best day’s racing of the year’. That truth has never dated. Nor has the classic elegance of Derby Day dressing, whatever the fashion. But when was the very first Victoria Derby? And when did Derby Day become that blue-ribbon day to open the Melbourne Cup Carnival? The race record dates back to 1855. It was the ‘Victoria Turf Club’ which introduced a set-weight Derby in spring for three-year-olds over the Epsom Derby distance. In a field of eight a filly, Rose of May ridden by Sam Holmes, was victorious. The Turf Club in that gold-rush era soon had a rival, the Victoria Jockey Club, which also raced at Flemington. Both clubs presented a Derby that year, the filly Tricolor winning the Jockey Club’s event and the colt Union Jack taking the Turf Club version. Luckily for simplicity, Brownlock in 1858 and Buzzard a year later won both races. In 1860 the Turf Club renamed its three-year-old race the ‘Victoria Stakes’, leaving the Jockey Club in possession of the Derby. It was won by the well named Flying Colours.

Clare Lindop makes history as the first female jockey to win the Victoria Derby with an impressive victory aboard outsider Rebel Raider in 2008. (Slattery Media/VRC Collection)

A STORY FROM THE VAULT

1929 Victoria Derby Presentation to the winner Phar Lap and trainer Harry Telford. (VRC Collection)

Four years later these rival clubs disbanded, and the new Victoria Racing Club took their place. In those days it was the Cup that opened the spring racing carnival. Over three consecutive days in 1864 the brown colt Lantern won the Melbourne Cup, the VRC’s first Derby and the one-mile Publicans’ Purse. The actual name “Victoria Derby” first appeared in 1868, with the race switched to New Year’s Day. This explains how the champion colt Fireworks appears twice in the record books as the Derby winner, for he had already won the VRC Derby the previous spring. But spring in Melbourne was where the Derby rightly belonged. The VRC returned the Derby to spring after the following racing season, and for the first time it was scheduled for the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup. And this explains why there are two names on the Victoria Derby winners’ list for 1869. The filly My Dream won on New Year’s Day, and the colt Charon won the version in spring. Indeed Charon’s Victoria Derby became the first to open a four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival, much as we know it today. Weather: glorious (not always guaranteed). Costumes: elegant, brilliant. The sport: ‘capital’. Derby Day at Flemington.

EQUINE WELFARE

Her Majesty The Queen is Patron of the Royal Windsor Horse Show and has attended every year since it started in 1943, when it was established to raise money for the war effort. The Show is a perfect platform for her retired racehorses, who have enjoyed considerable success in the show ring. The 78th edition of the CHI Royal Windsor Horse Show heralded a return to ‘almost normal’ for the equestrian world in yet another pandemic year. The Show, traditionally held in May each year, is a highlight of the global equestrian calendar. It is the only time of year that the private grounds of Windsor Castle, a Royal home and fortress for over 900 years, are open to the public. Her Majesty The Queen is Patron of the Show and has attended every year since it started in 1943, when it was established to raise money for the war effort. During the Second World War, Windsor Castle was home to the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose and today The Queen still uses the Castle regularly, spending most of her weekends there. The week of the Royal Windsor Horse Show is a perfect opportunity for The Queen to combine spending time at Windsor Castle with that of her love for horses. A keen rider herself, Queen Elizabeth II has taken a special interest in horses and racing all her life. Her passion for horse breeding and racing has resulted in success in some of the most famous races in the world, but that is not where her interest ends for these stars of the stable. Following their time sporting the famous purple, scarlet and gold colours, some of her racehorses also go on to have illustrious second careers. And a few of these have ‘stolen the show’ at Royal Windsor Horse Show over the years. The most well-known to date is Barbers Shop, the last horse to be bred by the Queen’s mother, Queen Elizabeth. After retiring from racing, he went on to win first prize in the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Thoroughbred Ridden Show Series Qualifier three times at Royal Windsor Horse Show, and also took Supreme Champion there in 2017. “IT IS SUCH AN HONOUR TO RIDE HER MAJESTY’S HORSE,” ADMITS KATIE, “SOMETIMES I HAVE TO PINCH MYSELF.”

The popular ex-racehorse, re-trained and ridden in the show ring by Katie Jerram-Hunnable, returned to the Royal Windsor Horse Show the following year for a special retirement celebration. It was his second retirement; the first had been from his National Hunt racing career during which he was trained by Nicky Henderson, winning eight races between 2006 and 2012 and more than £143,000 in prize money. “Barbers Shop was a very easy horse to retrain, thanks to Nicky Henderson,” says Katie Jerram-Hunnable. “He came to me in October 2012 when he was 11 years old and by March the following year he was already winning classes and won his first Royal Windsor in May.” There were a few little things however that the ex-racehorse had to get his head around before becoming a showing star. “He was an amazing horse to ride and compete – his only weakness was his canter transitions. He could take quite a hold in them! We spent four months just doing canter right, canter left but you could never drill him. Eventually he got the idea, and it was very easy once he understood what was being asked,” says Katie. “Barbers Shop is still with us now, he’s still in work and looks a million dollars!” says Katie fondly of the horse.

23

EQUINE WELFARE

“Her Majesty made the decision to retire him after his third win at Royal Windsor so that he could go out in top competition form.” Although he no longer competes, Barbers Shop fans still get to see him at Retraining of Racing Parade Days although these outings have been reduced in pandemic times, much to the dismay of Barbers Shop himself. “He loves a day out,” laughs Katie. “If I loaded up and took him out to a competition tomorrow, he would be as happy as Larry. But he really has no need to prove himself anymore.” In 2020 the Royal Windsor Horse Show, like so many others around the world, was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. In its place, an online version of the Royal Windsor Horse Show competition took place and the Queen had to settle for third place when the virtual Ridden Class was won by an Off The Track thoroughbred on the other side of the world. “It was quite surreal just to be competing against the Queen at Royal Windsor, let alone winning,” said Melissa Molloy whose Australian Off The Track thoroughbred Relmsparc Foxtrot took the honours. The Royal Windsor Horse Show was back in real life again in 2021 and once again Her Majesty the Queen was in the winner’s circle. Enjoy more stories covering topics related to veterinary and research, post-racing careers, VRC & the industry, facilities and practices, and #LovetheHorse on the Equine Welfare Bulletin site here: https://www.vrc.com.au/equine-welfare-bulletin/ “Sadly, Granny didn’t live to see the day that The Queen first rang me to discuss riding her horses, but I do know that she would be very proud now!” “After Barbers Shop, I think they were keen to find another one for me to ride. So, when First Receiver came along, I was given the opportunity to go see him at the Sandringham Stud and discuss the opportunity before it was decided that he would come to me,” says Katie. “When I was a child, my grandmother used to chide me for having elbows on the table, saying ‘What would The Queen say if she walked in and saw you?’ and I used to reply, ‘Don’t be silly Granny, that would never happen.’” “When he does go in the ring with me, I want him to be 100% ready. He has been ridden away from home and he’s a good stick, but he needs time so this winter he’ll be doing some dressage competitions before his debut under saddle in the show ring. Hopefully by mid- 2022 he will be well established in his new career,” Katie adds. Her Majesty’s stud groom Terry Pendry discusses with Her Majesty the horses that they would like to come to Katie and will suit the environment at Collins Farm. On the third day of the show the Queen’s home-bred former racehorse, First Receiver won the Retraining of Racehorses In Hand class. Once again, the Jerram-Hunnable team had been chosen to help First Receiver make the move into his new career. At Royal Windsor he was shown in hand by Katie’s husband, Chris Hunnable, a former eventing rider who rode for Britain at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. “My husband started in showing before he turned to eventing and he still loves the in-hand work – he does it with all my horses. But Her Majesty sends the horses to be ridden by me and I’ll be taking over the reins in the ring next year,” says Katie. “I’m riding First Receiver at home but the In Hand competitions are perfect for gently allowing him to get used to the competitions rather than immediately taking him to a show under saddle.”
