Francesco Sauro, who is leading scientific expeditions deep into the caves of South America’s remote tabletop mountains, is one of the explorers who have benefited from the awards. Other former laureates include Cristian Donoso, who kayaked along the coast of Western Patagonia, documenting this dramatic region to throw a spotlight on its value, and Gina Moseley, who is exploring the planet’s northernmost caves to improve our knowledge of climate change in the Arctic. Moreover, new tracking technologies developed by Rolex Laureates are proving a powerful weapon in the race to save endangered species. For example, English zoologist Rory Wilson created the Daily Diary, a lightweight electronic logger that provides valuable data on the behaviour of animals such as penguins and leopards. Similarly, South African scientist Louis Liebenberg designed the CyberTracker to enable Kalahari Bushmen to record their observations of animals, but the technology has proved a highly versatile scientific tool. With such extraordinary individuals, expeditions, and innovations, and with companies like Rolex standing behind these game-changing endeavours, there is still hope of maintaining Earth as a habitable planet. As Earle said at COP26 in Glasgow, “We have the technology to suck up all this carbon dioxide: We have trees, forests, and we are going to change the world from this point onward, one way or another. Either from what we do, or what we fail to do “. .
who were responding to major challenges with innovative projects. The awards do not look at individual qualifications, academic background, or nationality. Instead, they focus on the potency of the ideas and their ability to benefit life on earth. To date, the initiative has attracted 35,500 applicants from 190 countries. Five laureates are chosen in each biennial edition of the awards, through a meticulous process that involves peer review, assessment, interview, and evaluation of the likelihood of their project achieving its aims. The laureates receive a cash grant to advance their projects, as well as access to Rolex’s network of 155 laureates, international publicity through media coverage, and a Rolex chronometer. The 155 individuals selected as Laureates since the launch of the programme have had a remarkable impact. An estimated 17 million people across the globe have benefited; around 23 million trees have been planted; 43 endangered species and 30 ecosystems protected, including 57,600 square kilometres of Amazon rainforest; and hundreds of new species have been discovered. Additionally, 18 challenging expeditions have been completed and 48 innovative technologies have been developed and used for a range of applications.
