told me that I have an eye for the medium, and encouraged me to continue, so I left my law studies to pursue this new- found passion. Where did you grow up and in what kind of environment? I grew up in a small rural town in Extremadura, a region of Spain bordering Portugal. The landscape is characterised by vast plains, mountains, and the Guadiana River. The geography of Extremadura makes it an ideal place for agriculture, and it is known for its production of olive oil, wine, and Iberian ham. Exploring Extremadura is journeying into the heart of old Spain, from the country’s finest Roman ruins to mysterious medieval cities and time-worn villages. It was inhabited by various civilizations, including Celts, Roman, Visigoths and Moors. Mérida, Cáceres and Trujillo rank among Spain ’ s most beautifully preserved historical settlements. My early childhood was spent playing outdoors all day, and it was in this environment where I grew up, able to indulge in curiosity, research, and outdoors activities surrounded by nature. What was your formal training in photography and what did you learn during this time? I first studied Photography at the Optima Photographic Studios and Photojournalism at Tower Hamlet College in Greenwich in London. After this, I moved to Wales to study documentary photography at the University of Wales in a small town called Caerleon, near Newport. In those days, it was the only university in Europe where you could pursue a BA in documentary photography. In the first six months, I was only allowed to shoot in black and white using film cameras. The professor explained that by doing so, I must be very selective and precise with the subject and compose the images using very few elements in the frame, and that it would help develop an eye for detail. One of the best ways to draw out creativity from an artist is to limit them. Perhaps this is why some of the best photographers are known for shooting in black and white. A lack of colour creates an emphasis on other visual elements.

G orgeous light, meticulous compositions, unusual angles: the work of Dubai-based photographer and cinematographer Victor Romero is striking in both its bold simplicity and its attention to detail. Romero was born in Spain and trained in the UK, but now he roams the world documenting iconic architecture, luxury interiors and top-of-the-range travel destinations. Along the way, he has shot using helicopters, drones, and scuba-diving equipment, which allows him to get stunning aerial and underwater shots. Shawati’ collaborated with Romero on a limited-edition book on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and on other projects over the span of decades. We caught up with him as he prepared to catch a flight to New York to hear more about the path that has led him here, and what he dreams of conquering next. What started you on the path to photography? Where there any early experiences or influences that were formative? Initially, I was studying law at the university in the city of Caceres in Spain in the 1990s. I took a trip to London where I did a photography course, which involved using traditional film cameras and chemical processes to capture and develop photographs. You expose film to light through the camera’s lens to create a latent image, process the film using chemical development techniques to reveal the captured image, and print the image onto photographic paper using an enlarger. I find this entire process simply magical. I think this was the moment I fell in love with photography. The course instructor
