CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
Welcome to Paramount+ Stakes Day, the finale to the 2021 Melbourne Cup Carnival, traditionally a day for families to enjoy top-class racing and facilities at Flemington. The Victoria Racing Club is delighted at the prospect of welcoming a limited number of racegoers back to the course today. Through our broadcast partners we are pleased to be able to share the excitement of Paramount+ Stakes Day with you, wherever you may be. The Group 1 Paramount+ Mackinnon Stakes, with prizemoney of $2 million, has now cemented its place as the VRC championship 2000 metre race of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Many great horses have won this race, and its history is outlined elsewhere in this race books. Sharing top billing with the Mackinnon today is the Group 1 Darley Sprint Classic - a $2 million race over 1200 metres down the famous Flemington Straight Six course. For Australia’s greatest sprinters, this is their final chance in 2021 to show who is the champion sprinter. The VRC is proud to include the race called “The Amanda Elliott” on the card today. This is a tribute to my predecessor in oce. Amanda Elliott served on the Victoria Racing Board, formerly the Committee, for eighteen years. She became the first woman to hold oce as VRC Vice Chairman, and the first to serve as Chairman of the Club, from 2017 until her retirement at the end of last year. A tribute to Amanda Elliott also appears in these pages. Today we also see the running of the World Horse Racing Grand Handicap recognising the global media business partnership between the VRC, Ascot, Goodwood, Breeders Cup and The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Throughout the Melbourne Cup Carnival I have sincerely thanked all racing supporters and everyone in the racing industry, and especially all at the VRC and Flemington, for their extraordinary dedication in keeping our sport alive and flourishing.
I hope you have enjoyed the Melbourne Cup Carnival as it draws to its conclusion. Good health and good luck for the Paramount+ Stakes Day. We hope to see you all in person at Flemington in 2022.

A STORY FROM THE VAULT
The weight-for-age 2000 metre championship race that has been long known as the Mackinnon Stakes used to be part of Victoria Derby Day, the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, ever since Cup Week went to a four-day racing format more than a century and a half ago. It was called the Melbourne Stakes back then. It became the L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes in 1936. Five years ago, in 2016, the Victoria Racing Club Board decided to switch the Mackinnon to the fourth and final day of the Carnival, increasing its prizemoney to $2 million. Instead of being a stepping stone to glory, the Mackinnon Stakes became the feature act of the final day. In its previous Derby Day position, for many horses it was an essential pathway to success in the Melbourne Cup a few days later. Champion trainer Bart Cummings often used a run in the Mackinnon to bring his horses to the peak of fitness for the Cup. His father Jim Cummings had followed that path successfully with Comic Court in 1950. Even a beaten run in the Mackinnon was sufficient to top the Cummings horses off for the Melbourne Cup, as Think Big proved on two occasions back in 1974/75. Let’s Elope (1991) and Rogan Josh (1999) both won the Mackinnon on their way to Melbourne Cup victory. Since it worked for Jim and Bart Cummings, other trainers tried the same formula. Mick Robins found it worked for his dual Cups winner Rain Lover, in 1968 and 1969. Several Melbourne Cup winners went on to secure victory in the Mackinnon in the year or years following. Altogether, 20 Cup winners have a Mackinnon (or Melbourne Stakes) win on their record. A further 24 winners of the Mackinnon were placegetters in Melbourne Cups. The logic of changing the date in 2016 was sound. After Ireland’s Vintage Crop won the Cup in 1993, more and more horses arrived directly from the northern hemisphere with the Cup their object. These horses had training preparations very different fromAustralian horses. Racing in top company in Europe’s spring and summer, they HOW FINAL DAY BECAME MACKINNON STAKES DAY BY ANDREW LEMON

did not need a solid 2000 metre race so close to Cup Day. If they did race in Australia before the first Tuesday in November, then the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate or the Geelong Cup suited their preparations better, allowing a longer break. Some trainers opted for the 2500 metre Lexus Stakes (Hotham Handicap) on Derby Day which offered automatic inclusion in the Melbourne Cup field. By swapping the Derby Day Mackinnon with the 1600 metre Cantala Stakes – a feature race that had operated under many sponsors’ names on the final day over the past 60 years – trainers with Cup ambitions had a further option with a shorter weight-for-age Group 1 on Derby Day. Another benefit of moving the Mackinnon was to create a rich Group 1 prize after a ten-day break for Cox Plate competitors not aiming for the Melbourne Cup. The original Derby Day Melbourne Stakes had been renamed in honour of Lauchlan Kenneth Scobie Mackinnon who joined the VRC committee in 1905 and served as Chairman for nineteen challenging years from 1916. History has not been kind to L.K.S. Mackinnon. In the popular 1983 Phar Lap movie he is the pantomime silvertail villain, plotting to pile

penalty weights on the back of the people’s horse to privilege his own aristocratic colt, Carradale. His views about women trainers and jockeys (he did his best to keep them out of racing altogether) were not widely shared even at the time. He preferred quality in racing to quantity, thought there was too much racing, and helped close down the many privately owned small suburban racecourses that operated in Melbourne. He had his detractors. Yet Flemington flourished under Mackinnon’s leadership. With Henry Byron Moore he oversaw the necessary transformation of the racecourse in 1924 when the Members’ Stand, Birdcage and Mounting Yard were repositioned from their traditional place at the Elms near the riverside. He guided the Club through the tough Depression years. As an owner, Mackinnon enjoyed mixed success and made light of disappointments. He won the 1914 Melbourne Cup with Kingsburgh (a grandson of Carbine), and had many big race wins. His favourite horsewasWoorak, an exceptional miler. He stoodWoorak successfully as a stallion at his Chatsworth Park stud farm. Later, Mackinnon became the last owner of historic Maribyrnong Stud, upstream of Flemington. Admirers praised him as sportsman, owner, breeder and administrator, a man of vision. Said one, “the sound position of racing today is largely due to his foresight and vision”. The Mackinnon Stakes remembers his contribution.

EQUINE WELFARE
Rehab4Rehab is leading the way in evidence-based equine therapy program, offering a unique style of clinical psychology minus the clinical setting, and with the addition of retired racehorses who are proving extremely adept at breaking down barriers. Clinical Psychologist Joanna Paterson has always appreciated the value of the human connection with horses, but it’s never been more apparent to her than now that retired racehorses are changing - and saving - young lives. As Head Of Therapy at Rehab4Rehab, Joanna treats some of the most vulnerable children suffering from the most severe forms of mental illness, and it’s changed her view on therapy. “I’ll never do therapy with a child or teen in a clinical room ever again,” she says. Rehab4Rehab is Australia’s most advanced evidence-based equine therapy program, offering a unique style of clinical psychology minus the clinical setting, while also helping injured racehorses through their recovery. Sadly, many children who attend Rehab4Rehab do so as a last resort, because traditional therapy hasn’t worked for them. “We find that when kids aren’t under a spotlight and expected to disclose personal information, they are far more likely to open up and engage in meaningful conversations,” Joanna explains. Founder Alisha Griffiths says that more often than not something remarkable happens when a child meets a horse at Rehab4Rehab, leading to life-changing outcomes. “We see the profound impact of equine therapy on children every day. We’ve seen non-verbal kids speak for the first time, we’ve seen suicidal kids turn their lives around through our programs; it’s amazing what can happen when the pressure is off.” THE PERFECT MATCH: RETIRED RACEHORSES CHANGING YOUNG PEOPLE’S LIVES BY BELINDA MEYERS
22
Whether they’re leading a horse or doing groundwork, therapy is based on mindfulness and ‘being in the moment’, empowering young people to manage their anxiety, regulate their emotions and improve their communication skills. “They will walk to a creek with a horse, sit on a bale of hay in the hay shed or hose a horse’s leg. The horse is the intervention, there are unlimited role-play scenarios taking place in real-life nature and the clinical psychologist is noticing everything along the way.” “Often that’s just the environment a child needs to take that first step towards sharing the most horrific and heartbreaking issues going on in their lives. And if you asked 15 parents, they would say that (head therapy horse) Crackajack has saved their child’s life,” Alisha says. Ex-racehorse Crackajack is just one of a number of injured or homeless horses that have found a purposeful life after racing, helping humans while also healing themselves. He’s in good company with others like Sale Cup winner Eraset, One Won’t Hurt, Cauliflower and Street Prince to name a few. While these thoroughbred geldings may have held no monetary value as injured racehorses coming off the track, they are the perfect equine therapy horses and priceless in the eyes of parents.
“They are so humanised; they have been exposed to humans since they first opened their eyes. Racehorses have already beendesensitised; they’ve seen dogs, helicopters, umbrellas, everything! There’s not a lot they haven’t seen, and the more they have raced, the more they’ve seen and the more easily they take to equine therapy.
23
EQUINE WELFARE
“I’LL NEVER DO THERAPY WITH A CHILD OR TEEN IN A CLINICAL ROOM EVER AGAIN.”
“Having a human on their back, it’s all they know,” Alisha says. “One Won’t Hurt will be banging at the gate wanting to come out and connect with the children, and Eraset will stand at the gate waiting for his therapy session. It’s incredible to see the connection on both sides.”
Rehab4Rehab is now an Off The Track Acknowledged Retrainer and part of Racing Victoria’s RESET program, while also a registered charity helping children from all walks of life, even if they are unable to afford the therapy themselves. Beyond the benefit to children and retired racehorses with limited options, Rehab4Rehab is on a mission to spread the word about the value of thoroughbreds after racing. “We are showcasing to the community - non-racing people included - how valuable retired racehorses are. We’re trying to change the narrative of the way people see these horses. We also want the industry to see the program in action, and we’d love to get to the point where equine therapy can be integrated with stable and staff wellbeing programs in the future. “It’s a very powerful win-win for the racing industry and the health industry. We’ve got the system - the demand is there, we just need more therapists, more locations and, of course, more horses to go through the program.”
