JUSTA M. WIDGINS

Liberian food is heavily influenced by Southern American food and is a flavorful marriage of the two. My love for cooking began at a very young age. I was nine years when I prepared my first meal. While my two younger brothers were night impressed by my amateur cooking skills, my father certainly was, and he made sure that they ate every bite of the dinner I cooked for the family that night. Since then, bringing joy to my family and friends by cooking has and will always be my favorite thing to do. My grandmother always said ’ “Goo d food made with love is medicine for the soul. At Justa’s Liberian Cuisine, each dish is prepared with love.

The Story Behind the Menu… My name is Justa M. Widgins and I am the owner of Justa’s Liberian Cuisine. The restaurant industry would refer to my food as ethnic, but I call it, simply delicious. For those who are not familiar with Liberian food or it’s people, allow me to introduce to y ou my beautiful homeland and myself. I was born in Liberia, West Africa, and moved to the states when I was just six years old. I am now forty- four years old, and unlike most of my family, I have not been back to visit but plan on to in the very near future. Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia was founded in 1822 as a settlement for the American colonization Society, an organization who believed freed black people(slaves) would have a better life in Africa than in the United States where their rights were limited and pretty much non-existent. Along with Afro-Caribbean, they relocated to the African settlement and brought with them their culture and traditions which included the food they ate, mostly food from the Southern parts of the United States.
