The Young Person and Personal Bible Study By B etty R. W eiser

I just don’t care what happens to me any more!” This de spairing remark was uttered recently by a high school young person; one who had felt God’s call to the ministry, no less. What had come over my young friend? Where was his glowing testimony? Before the evening had progressed very far I was able to diagnose the reason for his spiritual illness. My friend had been neglecting his own private devotions. How could he expect to remain spiritually healthy when he was starving himself, feed ing only upon the preacher’s mes sages on Sunday, expecting them to sustain him throughout the entire week? Perhaps the answer for such neglect of the Word lies in the statement made by another young person when he said, “ I just wish I really knew how to study the Bible!” Since it is vitally important that every Christian young person be come a student of the Bible, and since the above paragraph may well describe your own situation, may I suggest several methods of Bible study for you to try in your own private devotions? First of all, the student needs some basic equipment if he intends to really study the Bible, for there is a great difference between mere ly reading the Word and studying the Word. A good Bible with clear print is the most important need, of course. Then it would be wise to invest in a good concordance. And, since marking our textbook helps to bring out the main points, you will find red, blue and green lead pencils to be invaluable. Now the method of Bible study will depend a great deal upon the amount of time you can set aside for such study. If you have only 15 minutes to devote to the study of God’s Word, it stands to rea son that your method of study will have to be quite simple. After ask ing the Holy Spirit to assist you in understanding the Word, you are ready to begin your study. Select a

book in the Bible which you wish to study, and stick with it day by I day until you have studied the entire book. It is well to follow these three steps of study, writing an answer to each question: Ob serve —What does it say?; Interpret —What does it mean? and Apply — What does it mean to me? Suppose, for example, that you were studying 1 Corinthians 13. Under Observe you might write the following explanation: It describes what “ love” is and declares “ love” to be the greatest of all spiritual gifts. Under Interpret you might write: Anything we do for the Lord or for our fellowmen is of no lasting value unless it is prompted by “ love.” Under Apply your convic tion might be: I find that I do not measure up to this kind of love. (It would be well to name the specific ways in which you do not measure up.) This simple but profitable Bi ble study could then form the basis for your prayer time. Use your col ored pencil to underline any partic ular portion of Scripture which the Holy Spirit presses home to your heart. The Lord Jesus has called us to become “ fishers of men” and so sometime it would be well to check out a book from your church li brary having to do with personal evangelism and, using this book and your Bible, look up good salvation verses and underline them in red so that they will be easily recog nized when you have the oppor tunity to point another individual to the Saviour. You will, of course, want to memorize some of these basic verses so that you will be a ready tool in the Master’s hands. Another method of studying the Scriptures is to study them topical ly. That is, take a particular word and, with the help of your concord ance, study various passages in which this word occurs. Study such words as Love, Joy, Peace, Long- suffering, Faith, Hope, Temptation, Chastise, Trust and Guidance. There CONTINUED
