JANUARY 2021

GATHERING AROUND THE HEARTH

As Ohioans, we know all too well that after the excitement and festivities of Christmas, January blasts in with blowing snow, frigid temperatures, and days where it gets dark by 5 p.m. Even in normal times, it’s enough to make you think that bears might be onto something with that hibernation thing. Despite it all, I often find myself feeling thankful for January’s wintry assault because it reintroduces me to an enduring comfort — having a fire in the fireplace. Flickering flames, embers glowing red, the aroma of hardwood smoke filling the air, the crackling and popping of the burning logs; there is nothing more soothing than a fire. Feeling the warmth on my cheeks, I am transported back in time to my childhood. Living in the country, January days would include doing our chores to take care of the cows and horses, as well as sled-riding and snowball fights. And then, after the dinner dishes were dried and put away, my brother and sisters would gather around the fireplace, usually with a cup of Mom’s hot chocolate with marshmallows on top. Then my mom and dad would take turns reading aloud. Looking into the fire, the heat warming cold fingers and toes, I would be transported into the story, my imagination painting the scenes as they were read. My parents would

have to fend off our clamoring for “just one more chapter please” as we were rounded off to our beds. Some of my fondest memories of Hillary and me raising our family are lying on the floor in front of a fire blazing in the fireplace and our three kids on the couch cuddled under a blanket, all of us listening intently as Hillary read the “Harry Potter” books with special voices for each of the characters. When we bought our building in Ontario to convert into our law office 18 years ago, it felt like a good omen that our conference room had a fireplace. To this day, when the winter wind is blowing, we sit down to meet with our clients with

the flames from the fireplace creating a warm and welcoming place. Sometimes making a fire is not practical — no wood, no matches, no fireplace — but no problem! I just discovered we can turn our TV into a fireplace. Netflix has an entire hour in high definition of a fire burning in a fireplace on the ready any time we need it. So, this January, when old man winter comes knocking and we wait for the COVID-19 vaccines to roll out, I will be grateful for the simple pleasure of a fire in the fireplace, and I hope the same for all of you and your families.

INSPIRATION CORNER It’s the start of a new year, and 2020 was a rough one. For many of us, getting through last year took fortitude, resilience, and determination. We took encouragement and comfort wherever we could find it. For 2021, we decided to start a new column in our newsletter, where we will share a favorite quote from someone who inspires us. The inaugural quote is from our dear friend and client John Montgomery. John is someone who handles himself with grace and courage. For John, the glass is always half-full. He is sincere, spiritual, and compassionate, and his good humor is contagious. John finds comfort in Deuteronomy 31:6: “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
