The Lessons You Learn on the Soccer Field Will Stay With You Long After the Final Whistle

April 2019

When you live in the Northeast, the emotion most often associated with the arrival of spring is relief. That’s especially true this year, because the winter was nothing short of brutal. I’m sure I don’t have to encourage you to go out, play in the grass, enjoy a cocktail on the patio, or engage in your favorite outdoor activity this spring. The spring endeavor I’m most excited for is a chance to get back on the soccer field — or “the pitch,” to those in the know — and begin coaching spring practice for the Freedom High School girls’ soccer team. I’ve been coaching for years, and it’s become one of the most important pursuits in my life. I didn’t set out for that to be the case; it just sort of happened naturally. My career as a soccer player was decidedly unremarkable. Like many youngsters of my generation, youth soccer was one of my first athletic endeavors. In those days, though, soccer was not the respected sport it is today. It was “foreign,” “wimpy,” and “kid’s stuff” compared to all-American alternatives like football and baseball. I don’t know if it was external pressure or simply a development of other pursuits that led me away from the game, but I did lose my zeal to play at some point. Despite never achieving glory during my playing days, I always kept an appreciation for the game. When my daughters were growing up and getting into soccer, I was always eager to volunteer to coach them. As they progressed to the ranks of high school, I joined them. I put as much effort into attending coaching camps and improving my tactical knowledge as they did in honing their first touch and free kick skills. Even after they graduated, I knew I’d remain the coach of the Patriots.

girls on my squad will have the opportunity to pursue higher education opportunities thanks to their soccer skills, and some have the potential to go even further. But more importantly, every single person who goes through the program has a chance to learn valuable life lessons that will resonate no matter what shape their futures take. Sports teach us perseverance, camaraderie, that life won’t always go our way, and so much more. Coaching is also a learning experience for me. I’ve learned skills as a leader that have translated to the practice, and I’ve been inspired by the resolve and determination of my players. In soccer, as in life, there is always room for improvement. Even Lionel Messi, who can do things with a soccer ball that truly boggle the mind, continues to press forward in pursuit of new heights. As a Barcelona fan, I’m hoping that relentless drive for mastery will result in another Champions League crown. It’s been amazing to witness the growth of soccer in this country. I never thought I’d see the day when I’d be spoilt for choice when it comes to watching European soccer on a Saturday morning. However, what’s more important than the reputation or popularity of any particular sport is that we continue to instill values in our young people through athletics. That’s certainly a big part of what keeps me on the sidelines year after year — well, that and being hopelessly obsessed with the sport.

The Legend of Babe Ruth

On April 27, 1947, the NewYork Yankees hosted the first Babe Ruth Day to honor the ailing baseball star, who had terminal throat cancer. As he rose to give a speech for the 58,339 fans in the stadium, Ruth’s condition caused him to have a coughing fit. With the thunderous cheers from the stands encouraging him to continue, he lovingly spoke to the thousands of people who had followed his career from his early years as a free-spirited Baltimore school kid to the world-renowned baseball legend he became. Even legends have to start somewhere, and Ruth began his baseball career in the minor league Baltimore Orioles, where his teammates gave him the nickname “Babe.” He was soon acquired by the Boston Red Sox, and he helped them win the World Series in 1916 and 1918. The following year, he was traded to the Yankees. His popularity in the Big Apple allowed the Yankees to move from a shared ballpark to one of their own in the Bronx, which was aptly known as “The House That Ruth Built.” Even through the 1919 World Series gambling debacle, which cast doubt over the sport’s future, the fans’ attention was still centered on the Sultan of Swat and what he would do next. The New York Times reported that as “home runs began to scale off his bat in droves, crowds jammed ballparks in every city in which he appeared.” All those home runs resulted in his record-breaking year in 1927, when he hit 60 over- the-fence home runs in a single season. While his home run record was eventually broken in 1961, the continued celebration of Babe Ruth Day keeps his love for the game and unmatched ability alive. To quote the classic baseball film “The Sandlot,” “Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.” In the Great Bambino’s case, the legend of his baseball career has survived for over a century and will continue to do so for decades to come.

A Fresh Smile in 2 Visits The Lumineers Difference

Veneers are an excellent option for people who have structurally sound teeth but are looking for a cosmetic upgrade. They can perform a number of corrective tasks, including fixing uneven lengths, gaps between teeth, discoloration, and slightly misaligned teeth. Today, patients have more options than ever before when it comes to choosing a veneer that’s right for them. In many cases, a proprietary type of veneer known as Lumineers is the most convenient and comfortable option. Lumineers are an ultrathin type of veneer that requires much less preparatory work to place. Patients don’t have to endure any shots, drilling, or temporary veneers like they do with traditional veneers, making the experience much more convenient and comfortable for patients looking to improve their smiles.

where an impression of your teeth is taken. That impression travels to a Lumineers-authorized laboratory. At the lab, custom-fitted veneers are created based on your needs and desired smile. From there, they are sent back to the dentist, who places them during your second visit. Placement involves a patient trying on the Lumineers to ensure the fit, appearance, and alignment is optimal. Once tested, the dentist gently etches your teeth to prepare them for placement — the amount of enamel removed is such that you won’t feel a thing. After placement, your bite is assessed again to guarantee the fit is perfect and that you won’t chip any veneers in the course of daily life. In addition to Lumineers, Fabey Dental offers traditional porcelain and composite veneers. If you want to explore your options further, call us today to set up a consultation.

In fact, Lumineers can be applied in just two pain-free visits. The first is an initial consultation

Rated E for Everyone

What Do Ratings Mean, and How Should You Use Them?

Despite guidance from ratings systems, it can be difficult for parents to discern what digital content is appropriate for their children. Learn more about ratings guidelines for common entertainment media and how to decipher that information so you can make educated decisions that work for your family. Movies: G-rated movies are considered suitable for all ages, whereas PG, PG-13, and R-rated movies are progressively less appropriate for kids because of violence, nudity, and language. Some ratings come with age limits; children who are under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult at R-rated movies. TV Shows: Due to laws that limit inappropriate content on public airwaves, TV rating systems follow unique codes. In the U.S., shows that are rated as TV-14 (content that is suitable for those ages 14 and older) can only air after 5 p.m. Meanwhile, TV-MA (content that is appropriate for mature audiences) can only air between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Most shows airing between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. are rated TV-G or TV-PG. These are similar in content to their movie counterparts. Some television children’s shows will also be rated as TV-Y or TV-Y7, and their only distinction is that TV-Y7 has been deemed appropriate for young children ages 7 and older. TV ratings can also have additional descriptors attached to them to explain what kind of content earned the rating. Video Games: There are seven video game ratings: Early Childhood (EC), Everyone (E), Everyone 10+ (E10), Teen (T), Mature (M), Adults Only (AO), or Rating Pending (RP). These ratings provide consumers with more information about content. Again, as the age of the intended user increases, content progresses from allowing mild violence or suggestive content to adult themes. When choosing family entertainment, experts suggest using both the rating and the description of the media to make your decision since the rating system may not fully explain media content. For example, studies have found that a PG-13 movie can sometimes have just as much violence as an R-rated movie. Additionally, you may be fine with the content in a T-rated video game for a more developmentally advanced 11-year-old. Once you get past all the combinations of numbers and letters, you as a parent might find that ratings for video games, movies, and TV shows provide helpful information. Couple the ratings with your own research and your own values, and put an end to worrying about what surprises may lurk in your children’s media.
