I COMPLETED 75 HARD! Now It’s Time to Start the Next Challenge

Can you believe we are already halfway through 2023? I can’t believe how fast time flies by! As I reflect on how 2023 is going thus far, I like to review my goals and see which items I’ve accomplished and what I can improve on. As you know, I had surgery at the end of October and had a lot of free time. While I took some time to relax and decompress, I wanted to start 2023 with a bang! One of the areas I want to focus on is my health and fitness. What better way to kick off the new year than with a challenge?

In October Kitchen’s March newsletter, I talked about how I participated in the 75 Hard challenge and completed it. I started the journey in January, and I am so proud of myself for continuing to push my boundaries and get out of my comfort zone. If you happened to miss March’s newsletter, here’s a small recap about the challenge. Andy Frisella created 75 Hard, and his rules and outlines are very straightforward: For 75 days in a row, you must complete five essential tasks daily. If you miss one day, you must stop and start all over. These tasks are to pick a diet or meal plan and stick to it — no cheat days or alcohol; work out twice a day for 45 minutes, with one workout being outside; drink a gallon of water every day; read 10 pages of a book that focuses on

self or business improvement, and take a progress picture daily.

While the tasks helped improve my health and challenged my body, it also tested my mental toughness. I had to learn how to stay motivated, determined and self- disciplined. I learned so much about myself and realized that I am way stronger than I give myself credit for. As I look back at my journey, I have a few key points I wanted to share with you. By the end of the challenge, I had drunk 75 gallons of water, walked over 225 miles, biked 500 miles, lost 34 pounds and read five books. When I started 75 Hard, I didn’t

WHEN I STARTED 75 HARD, I DIDN’T REALIZE HOW MUCH PROGRESS I’D MADE WITHIN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF 2023. HOWEVER, SEEING THESE NUMBERS GIVES ME A SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT.

Thank You for Your Hard Work GEOFF IS OUR SECRET WEAPON!

tell you that he loves the social interaction he gets to have with our team and customers. He loves connecting with others, learning about their hobbies and sharing his passions. But most importantly, he loves delivering a WOW experience to our customers. When Geoff isn’t working, you can find him playing video games or watching livestreams! Not only is he a mastermind behind our sealing machines, but he is also a pro behind the gaming console! If he’s not gaming, you can find him hanging out with his pet rabbit, Luna. They are the best of friends — she is always hopping around him! Thank you, Geoff, for all your hard work. We value and appreciate you so much! Thank you for being you!

he plays a crucial role in our daily routines at October Kitchen!

At October Kitchen, we love highlighting and praising our team for their hard work and dedication. Today, we wanted to discuss someone who does a lot for us: Geoff! Geoff has been with us for several years, and watching him grow has been an honor. Paul has known about Geoff for quite some time because Geoff’s mother, Lenora, is a customer of October Kitchen, and her business is right across the street from us! One day, Geoff told his mother he was looking for a job, and she immediately thought of us! After speaking with Lenora and meeting Geoff, we knew it would be a great fit. At first, he only worked one day a week, but as he got more accustomed to his role, he began working four days a week. Now,

While you may not see him, everything you get from us must go through his hands first. He runs our sealing machines and ensures your cookies, muffins and salads remain fresh. He also places the labels on our soup and salad containers. If it weren’t for Geoff, you wouldn’t have fresh food! He is October Kitchen’s superstar and secret weapon. It’s amazing to see Geoff work — he has his routine down to a T. It’s like you’re watching a robot as he casually seals dozens of containers and meals. Sometimes, we think he has more than two hands because he’s so fast!

If you were to ask Geoff his favorite thing about working here, he would

each day to recite the Lord’s prayer and spend quality time with God whenever possible.

realize how much progress I’d made within the first few months of 2023. However, seeing these numbers gives me a sense of accomplishment. But it doesn’t stop there — 75 Hard is only the beginning of Andy Frisella’s challenge! There are three other phases you can complete! After finishing 75 Hard, I took a week to decompress, but now I am starting the next phase. This phase includes everything I did during the first challenge, but I must add three additional tasks. The first is 10 minutes of journaling each day. I didn’t record my thoughts during 75 Hard, and I regret it! I’m not going to make the same mistake this time! The second is a daily stretching routine. I was very stiff and sore every day during the 75 Hard challenge, so I incorporated a 15-minute guided stretching routine for my back, hips and hamstrings. And the third is prayer. I want to take time

On top of these new tasks, I also have to take a five-minute cold shower daily. When I first did this, I hated it. But now, I secretly love it! I usually hop out of the shower laughing hysterically because of the dopamine rush you get after a nice, ice-cold shower. I highly recommend it! I’m excited to see where this journey takes me, and I can’t wait to see my progress this time. Do you think you’re up for the challenge? I would love it if you’d join me! YOUR BODY NEEDS NUTRIENTS TO RECOVERY PROPERLY!

WHAT SHOULD YOU EAT AFTER HAVING SURGERY?

When you’re recovering from surgery, it’s vital that you rest. Your body is working hard to heal, and staying off your feet is one of the best medicines. However, it’s equally important to fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to help with the healing process. But determining which foods to eat can be confusing — you have so many options! The best rule of thumb is to consume foods that will help you recover, strengthen your immune system and help alleviate post-surgery side effects. Here are the top six foods you should eat after surgery. Fruits and Vegetables The antioxidants in fresh fruits and vegetables will help boost your immune system by protecting your cells from free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause diseases, inflammation and other health issues. You can eat berries, oranges, fruits, peaches, carrots, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, kale and other dark leafy greens. However, if you’re not keen on eating fruits and vegetables alone, try putting them in a smoothie! Soups and Broths You may experience nausea or loss of appetite after undergoing surgery. While it may be difficult to eat during this time, you must nourish and hydrate your body to recover properly. Soups and broths are excellent options if you want to eat something light. They are lightweight and easy to swallow and give your body the necessary nutrients it needs. Consider eating soups or broths that include black beans, vegetables and protein. Proteins and Whole Grains When you consume food that is high in protein, it can help build and repair muscle tissues — which is great after surgery! Lean meats like turkey or chicken are excellent for protein. However, Greek yogurt, eggs, beans, tofu and nuts are also great options. Whole grains are another great option if you become constipated and need additional fibers. If you have any dietary questions, please consult your health care provider. And if you or someone you know is struggling to develop meals that will nourish the body, try getting your meals from October Kitchen! Our dishes are freshly made in-house and will give you the nutrients your body needs to thrive!
