with a person. That person must be someone who has something in com mon with us. We cannot have fellow ship with God without having God’s life. Fellowship has been defined as a joint participation with someone else in things held in common by both. This means then that those who have fellowship with Jesus must participate in things they have in common with Him. For instance, we must participate in His life. “He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” We must also have His nature which is the result of that life. From that will flow His love, a love that will love righteousness and hate sin. If we would fellowship with Jesus we must seek to do the will of the Father as He did it. Jessup states: “This same eternal life is in all believers. We are all members of His body. Physically speaking, I have but one life which flows through my entire body. The life in my hand is not different from the life in my foot, and it is life all from the same person. And so, as members of the body of Christ, Christians have the same life and can fellowship together.” Verse 5 tells us “That God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” John did not say that God is “a light,” nor did he say that God is “the light,” but that He as to His nature is light. He is not like an electric bulb which can be turned off and on, but rather is the electri city itself. Light is perfectly pure and is in capable of pollution. In the Scripture it is used as a symbol for infinite holiness, infinite purity, and perfect righteousness. Lange states: “Light is also the basis of sight, and God, who as to His nature is light, has infinite knowledge. There is nothing in cre ation that is hid from Him. There is no transaction that takes place in darkness that is not seen by Him. The adulterer, the thief, the murder- 33

kind of life. It is a life which makes it possible for us to fellowship with God.” In verse 2 John tells us: “We . . . bear witness and show unto you that eternal life.” What is a witness? According to verse 1, it is one who saw, heard, looked upon, and han dled, or touched, the living Christ. The witness of the apostles was actually twofold. First, they told of their experience, then they showed by their behavior that they had that new life within them. We cannot say we have seen the physical form of our Lord, but like the apostles we too have received Him as Saviour and He now lives out His life through us. Of course, we too have a witness by word of mouth; however, we are not only to talk about Christianity but also to live it. The next word we want to con sider is the word “fellowship.” We cannot fellowship with something ab stract. Fellowship can be had only
