A resident of Cornwall is hoping a petition she started on Change.org garners enough signatures to make the city’s transit ser- vices offer bus routes on Sundays. “We need to have buses running on Sun- days in Cornwall in order for people to get to and from work and church,” explained Kamala Wright. “It is very hard to get from one end of town to the other by walking, especially if you have to be on your feet all day at work.” As of July 15, the petition had 341 signa- tures, with several individuals citing their need for transportation on Sundays. “I need to get to work,” said Blair Rombough. “Wal- king from Montreal Rd. to Boundary Rd., then working 12 hours and walking back gives me less quality time to spend with my wife and kids. does feel sympathetic towards residents, he does explain that introducing a Sunday service just wouldn’t work for the city. “As a transit person, I would love to see an expansion of Cornwall Transit in many areas including Sundays, so does the Transit Committee,” commented M. Tapp. “Com- munities that do provide Sunday service usually have a university or a large college.” There are many things to consider when implementing such a service: supervision, support personnel (mechanics and coach attendants), additional buses, fuel andmain-
tenance cost, snow removal and increased vehicle insurance cost. “The bus service has been running late most weekday afternoons between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.,” highlighted Tapp. “Staff are exploring options to alleviate this concern because it is having an effect on ridership. Options such as express routes, 15-minute service on some routes or extra buses to be used as needed during the problem hours could help.
