MAYOR KIRBY WANTS A NEW FIRE STATION

But Kirby has two particular local infrastructure needs in mind when he thinks about his wish list for the provincial and federal budgets. “We need a fire station for St-Eugène,” he said. “It’s not big enough for all the vehicles. There’s no shower facility for the men when they come back from a call. It just doesn’t meet the (current) standards.” Getting a new fire station for St-Eugène has been an ongoing issue for Mayor Kirby. But he’s had no success yet in convincing any senior government official of the need to support improvements to rural fire stations. “There never seems to be money for that,” he said. “But it is an essential service.” The other project Kirby would like to see funding for is the new community centre now under construction in St-Eugène. The municipality has a fundraiser plan in place for the project and did receive some federal money to include in the municipal budget, but Kirby noted that inflation poses a threat to both this year’s municipal budget and future budget plans with increasing fuel costs for township vehicles, rising electricity costs for public buildings and other facilities, and other expenses. The township has less room to allocate funds for the new community centre project and is relying on a public fundraiser to try and avoid having to take out an expensive loan for building the facility.

Le Centre des services d’emploi (CES) a noté dans un rapport que la disponibilité des logements est devenue la première chose que beaucoup de gens considèrent lorsqu’ils décident de déménager ou non à Hawkesbury ou ailleurs dans Prescott- Russell pour un nouvel emploi. Le maire Lefebvre a noté que le gouver- nement provincial a fixé un objectif de 1,5 million de nouveaux logements disponibles en Ontario d’ici 10 ans. Le maire a indiqué que tout plan visant à encourager un plus grand nombre de projets de développement résidentiel nécessitera des partenariats privés-publics entre les échelons supérieurs du gouvernement et le secteur du logement. «Tout le monde a des objectifs, a déclaré M. Lefebvre. Le défi est de rendre ces objec- tifs atteignables». L’aide aux infrastructures municipales est une autre question qui, selon le maire Lefebvre, doit être un élément prioritaire des budgets provinciaux et fédéraux. «Chaque municipalité est dans une position difficile», a-t-il dit, ajoutant que les coûts augmentent pour améliorer les infrastructures vieillissantes existantes et envisager de nouveaux projets de routes et de bâtiments.

The provincial and federal governments will soon announce their budget plans for this year and East Hawkesbury Township’s mayor has some ideas about what he would like to see in those documents. “I would like to see some (municipal) infrastructure money,” said Mayor Robert Kirby, during a phone interview.
