What We Love About Summer

Celebrations, Ice Cream, and Stargazing

and the kids and their friends got soaked but miraculously slept through it. I learned to be a bit more careful about where I put the trampoline after that. Summer also brings different foods and flavors. We love to barbecue, and we make homemade ice cream. We enjoy trying out different flavors and seeing which ones turn out best. My son-in-law has this incredible John Deere ice-cream maker that runs on gas out of a four-stroke engine. Talk about homemade ice cream! Stargazing is another activity we enjoy in the summer. We’re lucky to have clear skies and no city lights to distract from the beautiful night sky here in the Star Valley. Over the years, we’ve learned some of the constellations, and we take our time to pick out all the ones we can see. I hope you get to enjoy some of these activities over the next month. After a long winter, summer is a welcome change. As the weather warms up and the kids can finally run and play outside, our sanity improves. I wish you a wonderful start to your summer.

gear that we left behind! We searched for our missing gear on our trek back to no avail. Maybe the road took some items, but it gave us many memories in return. This August, we’ll have been married 39 years, and I feel like the luckiest man in the world. After we had kids, summer became intertwined with new memories. Our big trampoline in the backyard was a favorite summer sleeping spot for our kids. If they had a sleepover, chances are all the kids would opt to sleep on the trampoline. One time, the kids invited some of their friends, who were exchange students from Japan, over for a sleepover. They decided they would sleep out on the trampoline, so all told, there were about nine kids on the trampoline. The weight of their bodies brought them all toward the middle, so even if they spread out before going to sleep, they woke up all bundled next to each other. From time to time, I would move the trampoline, and on that night the kids had their friends over, I had moved it to a new area. I didn’t realize until the next morning that I’d made a mistake. My kids are very sound sleepers, and the reason I know this is because I accidentally set the trampoline over our automatic sprinklers. They came on in the middle of the night,

There are many things to love about summer, starting with the fact that Jeanelle and I got married and celebrate our anniversary in August. We got married at a church and drove to our reception afterward. Well, in reality, because my best man was at the wheel, we all but flew to the reception. It should have taken us 45 minutes to get there, but we arrived in 30. Despite the fact that we were the last to leave the church, we were the first to arrive at the reception. Soon enough, though, others arrived — a great many others. You see, a postal strike was going on in Canada at the same time we were planning our wedding. We had the wedding announcements all ready to send out, but due to the strike, we couldn’t send them. Instead, we put a notice in the newspaper. All told, close to 800 people came to the reception! We had such a wonderful time dancing that we practically had to be shooed out of the reception hall. Afterward, we were lucky enough to go on a two-week honeymoon along the West Coast. Our trip included a stop at the stunning Butchart Gardens in Victoria. Along the way, we lost a hammer, a flashlight, and many other items on our 600-mile journey. A bird’s-eye view of us would have shown a whole trail of camping

‘The Great Escape’

The Daring True Story of an Allied Getaway During WWII

But one prisoner wasn’t discouraged. Squadron Leader Roger Bushell saw these factors as obstacles to overcome rather than inescapable conditions. And in the spring of 1943, he initiated a plan to get himself and 200 of his fellow prisoners out of the camp. During the next year, over 600 prisoners helped with the effort of digging tunnels underneath Stalag Luft III. They had to be deep enough that the microphones couldn’t detect them and long enough to reach outside of the camp’s walls. On a chilly night in 1944 — a year after the endeavor began — one tunnel was finally ready, and the prisoners began their exit. In all, 76 Allied men managed to escape from Stalag Luft III. While freedom was short-lived for some, the escapees were successful in redirecting Nazi efforts from the front lines. And as veteran Jack Lyon said of the escape, “It did do a lot for morale, particularly for those prisoners who’d been there for a long time. They felt they were able to contribute something, even if they weren’t able to get out.” For the rest of the story, you’ll have to watch the movie or read the book. You can watch “The Great Escape” on Amazon Prime, and you can find Brickhill’s daring tale at most book retailers.

What do Steve “The King of Cool” McQueen, Richard Attenborough, and James Garner have in common? They all starred in the 1963 World War II classic “The Great Escape.” What makes the movie amazing to watch isn’t just that it’s full of legendary stars like McQueen and Garner or the fact that the action sequences were filmed using practical stunts, not special effects. What makes it truly incredible is that this story actually happened.

Based on WWII veteran Paul Brickhill’s book, “The Great Escape” depicts a group of Allied officers as they attempt to escape from Stalag Luft III, one of the most heavily reinforced prison camps under German watch. Loose sand, raised prison housing, and seismographic microphones were all meant to deter prisoners from digging their way out.

Feel Bad About Throwing Away Photos?

4 Rules for Guilt-Free Photo Downsizing

your best friend from college was? Keep those photos. Pictures of people whose names you can’t remember or blurry photos you can’t make out can all go. RULE NO. 3: EDIT WELL If you have a lot of photos from a specific event or part of your life, think about how long each “chapter” of your life story would be. How much time would you spend writing about your cousin’s wedding or high school prom? If a certain event didn’t have that much meaning in your life, why dedicate pages and pages of a photo album to it? RULE NO. 4: THROW PHOTOS AWAY If a photo isn’t important enough to put in an album or frame on the wall, then it doesn’t need to stick around. Don’t put them in a box you’ll have to sort through later. Let the rejects go. After all that hard work, treat yourself to a photo album shopping spree so you can start organizing the meaningful photos you have left.

If you’ve reached a point in your life where you’ve started to downsize, then you’ve likely grappled with the difficult task of getting

rid of photos. After decades of life, how are you supposed to choose which memories are important enough to keep and which aren’t? These four rules can help make this daunting task easier. RULE NO. 1: CUT SCENIC VIEWS You don’t need dozens of photos of that campsite you went to on vacation one summer. If a location was really meaningful, like the beach at your honeymoon, then keep a few, but pictures of the places you’ve been to are far less special than pictures of the people you love. RULE NO. 2: TELL A STORY When you look at a photo, does it make you want to tell a story about the people or places in the image? Could you share plenty of stories about riding around in Dad’s old truck or about how funny

Vaping and Your Oral Health

What to Be Aware of Regarding the Use of E-Cigarettes

Like nicotine, propylene glycol, another ingredient in most e-liquids, can also cause dry mouth. Dry mouth increases the likelihood of oral decay and puts you at an increased risk for cavities. Vaping may also increase the levels of cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. In one study, teeth exposed to vaping aerosols had four times as much bacteria as teeth that weren’t exposed. With so many yummy flavors to choose from, e-cigarettes may feel less risky than regular cigarettes, but don’t let that fool you. Take care of your teeth and your overall health and consider cutting back on — or cutting out — your tobacco use in any form. Coming to see us for your regular appointments every six months will also help us stay ahead of any issues. Some of the oral health issues connected to vaping might make it more difficult to maintain a healthy mouth, so it’s really important that you practice good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing twice a day, every day. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at Livingston Dental! We’re here to help you have a happy and healthy smile.

Smoking electronic cigarettes, or vaping, has become increasingly popular in the last couple years. Because vaping is relatively new, its long-term health effects are still unknown. But some concerning connections between vaping and oral health may be worth considering if you or a loved one vape. While it’s been advertised that e-cigarettes are less harmful than traditional cigarettes, many formulas still contain nicotine, which can cause dry mouth. According to a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the nicotine intake from smoking e-cigarettes is comparable to the amount from smoking traditional cigarettes. Some recent stories might also make you think twice about the claim that e-cigarettes are better for you. Take, for example, the patient who was cavity-free for 35 years. He switched from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes, and within a year, the enamel on his teeth had noticeably eroded, putting him at risk for cavities. Glycerin, one of the chemical sweeteners found in many e-liquids used for vaping, has been linked to enamel erosion and can explain the change.

Enjoy the Wyoming Night Sky

Stargazing in Your Own Backyard Enjoy the Breathtaking Night Sky

Saturn will be closer to Earth. The view through a telescope might allow you to see Saturn’s rings and even some of its moons, but even without one, you’ll likely still be able to see the planet. July 20 is also a new moon, and because there’s no moonlight to overshadow them, it’s the best time of the month to see galaxies and star clusters. Around July 28 and 29, the Delta Aquariid meteor shower will be at its peak, with meteors radiating out from the constellation Aquarius all across the night sky. Be on the lookout for these and other events over the next month. You don’t need a telescope to enjoy these celestial happenings, either. If you want to get a little closer than the naked eye takes you, you can use a pair of binoculars. When you’re heading outside, a flashlight with a red light will also help you better adjust to the darkness.

We’re lucky to live in this great state for many reasons. It’s home to multiple national parks, including Yellowstone, the nation’s first; Devils Tower, the first national monument; and Shoshone, the nation’s first national forest. Oh, then there are also the 25 national historic landmarks we have here. No doubt we live in a beautiful place, and while it’s absolutely stunning during the day, our wide-open spaces also mean our nights are equally beautiful. Just take a look up at the night sky one of these summer evenings. When you take a moment to do so, you’ll notice a brilliant, lively world just outside our own. If you time it right, you might also notice some exciting celestial events. Around July 14, for example, Jupiter will be closer to Earth than usual and appear brighter than it has all year long. On July 20,
