written Word of God and the incarnate Word of God. We shall never enjoy the one apart from the other. It is through God’s own reve lation in the written Word that we really see and know the Word who was made flesh and who rose from the dead. It. is through the written Word that we shall feed on Him, not through our own specu lations. It is important that we bear in mind that as the incarnate Word is a divine Person, so is the written Word a divine Message, and as we may rest all our soul’s interests on Jesus Christ, so we may rest all our soul’s weight on the Word of God.—J. H udson T aylor . OCTOBER 5 Growing “ Unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ’ (Eph. 4:13). I think the sense of our wants, when withal we have a restlessness and a sort of spiritual impatience under them, and can make a din, because we want Him whom cur soul loveth, is that which maketh an open door to Christ. When we think we are going backward because we feel dead ness, we are going forward; for the more sense the more life, and no sense argueth no life.— S amuel R utherford . "Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus” (Heb. 12:1,2). The Bible frequently compares the Chris tian with a runner in the arena. We are used to running races for pleasure. But the Bible indicates that the race in which a Christian runs is not a mere pastime; it is very serious business.' I t ' consumes a great deal of energy—all a person has. Hence Scripture urges us to run “with pa tience.” “ Patience” here means, as fre quently in Holy Writ, the ability to last; it refers to the ability to bear the tremen dous strain put upon one. It is only by Learn How to Build Sermons William M. Smith, the instructor in Homiletics and Psychology in Union, Bible Seminary, has pre pared a course of twenty lessons in Homiletics which will help you. Fifteen methods of outlining are employed. OCTOBER 1 His Hands "In whose hand is the soul of every liv ing thing” (Job 12:10). I am so safe in His gentle hands, Nor. would I ask to be free. The hands that were laid on the children’s heads Will tenderly deal with me. Hands that succored and hands that served, That fed the hungry with bread, Hands that gave to the blind their sight, Hands that raised from the dead. O beautiful hands of my living Lord! I shall see in eternity— Incredible love—my name engraved In those hands that were pierced for me! —M artha S nell N icholson . “By a new and living way” (Heb. 10:20). It was a. new way because it was a liv ing way. Men had hitherto been seeking in their religion only a dying way. They had thought that divine worship was some thing which was good for helping human souls to cross the valley of the shadow; they |had never thought of it as mainly useful in helping human souls to support the shadows of life. But when He came He consecrated a new road to God. . . . He told me that God’s presence could be reached without dying, that the grandest death of the spirit was the life of love, that the most reasonable service for a man was to present his body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God. ' — G eorge M athesgn . OCTOBER 3 Grafted "But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit” (1 Cor. 6:17). If we will not die to the natural, how can we expect to live to the supernatural? Paul puts it thus: “ If we be dead with him, we shall also live with him.” The branch which contrary to nature is grafted into a tree of another species, must die to the old life. It must send its roots into a new trunk. It receives a new life. Its relation with the old is severed so utterly, and so completely, and so continuously, that for it, the old no longer exists. It imbibes the new with a constancy which brings about a veritable fusion of the two.— F. J. H uegel . OCTOBER 2 The Living Way "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). “ For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven” (Psa. 119:89). It is well to remind ourselves of the close connection that exists between the OCTOBER 4 Unshakable Foundations
