disheartened because we do not see every step of this progress. God is looking after the bearing of the fruit; God is seeing that we are growing in grace, and in the knowl edge of God our Saviour; and the more we grow in grace the more will we be con scious of our self-insufficiency, of our own nothingness, —W. P. M ackay . OCTOBER 22 Victory in Death “ Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ; whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not” (1 Cor. 15:15). Thus has Christ changed the whole aspect of death. On this side, it is dark; on that, bright. -This side, departure, that, an arrival. This side, a going out, that, side, a coming in. Here it is a hooded horror, there an angel of light; here a sep aration, there, a reunion; here, a graveway, there, a gateway; here, a good-by, there, a good morning.— J ohn M c N eill . OCTOBER 23 Justice and Mercy "Therefore, as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemna tion; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justi fication of life” (Rom. 5:18). At the cross of Christ mercy and truth met together, righteousness and peace kissed each other; through the cross God can be a just God and a Saviour. The cross of

"Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Eph. 6:11). You would not think, to see some Chris tians, that there was much of a battle on. There seems to be an idea abroad that when we are born again, we are put into a bandbox and labeled for heaven, and marked, “This side up, with care.” But the Christian experience is not a mere picnic. There is a war on: the world, the flesh, the devil, and. all the forces of dark ness are against us when we take our stand in this world to please Him. There fore, it- is well that we should face up to this battle.—A. L indsay G legg . “ Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us" (1 John 3:16). Jew and Gentile, scribe and Pharisee. Were in the mob that clamored for the tree. They followed up the hill, and did not know That it was love, not whips, that made Him go. The soldiers, ’mid the howling, rabble bands Made sure the spikes that tore His feet and hands. Their exultation pierced the murky air— But it was love, not nails, that held Him there. — L eona D awson C ole . Not a little is said in Scripture of the angelic realm. We hear the morning stars singing their maiden song, and we take shelter from the flashing of their silver wings. Rank upon rank they rise, angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, principalities and powers, authorities and dominions, thrones, and countless dignities unnamed, of intelligence vast, of strength incredible, of wisdom profound, and of powers amazing. Yet “far above all” there is seated a Man with the print of the nails in His hands and feet. Above them all, the mighty power of God has exalted and enthroned the Christ. The once crucified One, rising from the grave, passed through and beyond all successive ranks of an gelic powers, until there was no grandeur which He had not left behind. —W . G raham S croggie . “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you” (John 15:3). The work of salvation was a gradual and progressive work, although, in one aspect of it, it was instantaneous and com plete. The implanting of the seed is an instantaneous act, but the growth of the plant is progressive. We are not to be OCTOBER 20 . Far Above “He raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion” (Eph. 1:20,21).
