POLICE MAKE CHANGES TO THEIR CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK SYSTEM

IS THIS THE END FOR THE PRESCOTT- RUSSELL RECREATIONAL TRAIL?

and payment model” was set up. In a statement, the OPP said only the exact cost of the check-in cash would be accepted. A criminal record check for employment purposes is $41 and checks for volunteer purposes are free. Duplicate copies cost $11, while an additional $90 was required for fingerprints. “The OPP understands the change in process may cause inconvenience. Howe- ver, it is confident that new measures taken to improve processing times will lead to shorter wait times for the public,” the statement said. “Third party vendors may be able to offer a reduced timeline. Please speak to your employer/agency to ascertain if this option would be acceptable, noting there is a cost for this service.”

Several of the mayors voting against extending the lease agreement cited a report from the UCPR public works department presented during the meeting. The report provided a preliminary assessment of the costs for future maintenance of the recrea- tional trail over the next 10 years. The report indicated that the UCPR would have to budget $400,000 to $600,000 a year to maintain the trail in safe condition for users. Comments from some mayors indicated the UCPR could better spend the money on its own county road improvements. The proposed two-year extension of the lease agreement with VIA Rail would have seen the railway company provide the UCPR with $40,000 a year for each of the two years towards upkeep of the recreational trail. Once the UCPR sends VIA Rail written notice for termination of the lease agree- ment, there is a 90-day period before the end of the deal becomes official. Most readers who commented about the decision on EAP’s social media pages expressed concern over the potential loss

Criminal record checks have been transferred back to detachments while the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) sets up a new online system in the wake of heavy demand. The OPP stopped accepting online applications on Friday afternoon. High demand for background checks had pushed the processing time out to between four and six weeks. From Monday, October 5, anyone who had not already submitted a request online was required to book an appoint- ment with their local detachment. In a statement, the OPP said this detachment system would be in place temporarily until “an enhanced online central intake

It may be the beginning of the end for the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) voted 5-3 in a recorded vote Wednesday, September 23, against a two-year extension of the lease agreement between the UCPR and VIA Rail concerning the former railway route that has served as the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail. The 72-kilometre-long walking and cycling trail extends from one end of the Prescott-Russell to the other, with links to recreational trails in the Ottawa area and also those leading into Eastern Québec. The mayors of Alfred-Plantagenet, Russell, and East Hawkesbury Townships, and the municipalities of The Nation and Casselman voted against extension of the lease agree- ment. The mayors for the City of Clarence- Rockland, Champlain Township, and the Town of Hawkesbury voted in favour.
