Faculty Senate Report – 10/07/2019

campus to identify the areas that are already functioning well and translate those practices into the recommendations for the larger university model. Within the month, the Academic Advising Council will share a report of their work this summer along with their revised recommendations. These revised recommendations will be discussed at open forums on campus this fall. Thus far, recommendations continue to advocate for a flexible hybrid approach to advising that allows strong, well-functioning department advising to continue while ensuring consistency in standards, equity in caseloads, and workload for faculty advising. Final recommendations will be shared with the Provost by the end of fall quarter.

Senate Priorities for Fall 2019:

Recommendations of the Sexual Misconduct and Gender Discrimination Task Force

At the end of the 2018–2019 academic year, the Sexual Misconduct and Gender Discrimination Task Force delivered their final report to the Faculty Senate. This task force was charged with investigating the CWU campus climate, policies, and practices related to sexual violence, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination and with drafting recommendations for new policies and practices on campus. During the summer, the Executive Committee read the task force’s final report and drafted charges based on the recommendations of the task force. Most of the recommendations relate to areas of the university outside of the purview of Faculty Senate. To help communicate these recommendations, the Executive Committee has drafted letters to each division of the university outlining the task force recommendations that pertain to them. In addition, the Executive Committee plans on meeting with each vice president to discuss the recommendations for their division, and their plans for addressing them. The Executive Committee takes the recommendations of the Sexual Misconduct and Gender Discrimination Task Force seriously and is looking forward to the opportunity to collaborate across campus to respond to the recommendations. During the upcoming academic year, the Faculty Senate is planning on working closely with the Office of the Provost in implementing a number of faculty-focused, evidence-based retention initiatives. Our Senate Standing Committees will be busy helping to draft policies to support changes to the academic warning, probation, and suspension policy; improvements in the transfer articulation process for the General Education program; and clarity about the communication of holds placed on student accounts.
