Faculty Senate Report – 10/07/2019

Senate Chair and Past-chair are voting members, defined the process by which changes to RCM/ABB may be proposed, modeled, and evaluated. Now that the first set of model changes have been proposed, the Faculty Senate Budget and Planning Committee is eager to see the results of this process. It is our hope that through this model change proposal process we may adjust the RCM/ABB budget model to better reflect and incentivize our institutional priorities.

Reorganization Policy

During summer 2019, UPAC passed the Consultation on the Creation, Reorganization, and Renaming of Academic Units policy. We anticipate receiving requests that utilize this new policy during the upcoming academic year. In preparation for these requests, I have already been in contact with the Academic Deans and look forward to clarifying the exact steps that must be taken to improve consultation surrounding reorganization. I have also begun communicating with the Academic Department Chair’s Organization (ADCO), and the Provost Council about the best ways to assess the impact and utility of this consultation process. Our Academic Affairs Standing Committee is prepared to draft procedures to aid in the implementation of the Creation, Reorganization, and Renaming of Academic Units based on our experiences this academic year.

Conclusion

We are pleased with the positive start to the new academic year. The refocusing of retention initiatives should help us to continue our improvement in fall-to-fall student retention. We also look forward to continual assessment and improving of our consultation process to ensure it is meaningful without being onerous. Finally, we are optimistic about the RCM/ABB model change process and look forward to innovative model change proposals in the future.

Respectfully Submitted,

Walter Szeliga Faculty Senate Chair (2019–2020)
