GIVING THANKS

The season of gratitude is here again, and it’s almost time for me to don my chef’s hat. It’s looking like we’ll host the big dinner at our house again, and I’ll be the one in charge of the bird and other main dishes. I’m more than happy to do the cooking, especially this year. Earlier this year, we lost a dear member of the family. Their loss is still felt, and it’s underscored gatherings like Thanksgiving and how precious they really are. Last year, in this November edition I reminisced about past trips to the Big Apple for the holiday and all the lights and spectacle that came with it. But right now, I’m more than happy to postpone that trip and simply have a gathering of loved ones around our dinner table, where we can eat, laugh, and cherish one another’s company. I hope you and yours can do the same. And, of course, I can’t talk about gratitude without thanking you, our clients. Working with you this year has been a pleasure — as it is every year. But in 2019, my team and I felt especially appreciated. We’ve received an amazing number of referrals from so many of you, including members of your family. That you would give us such a vote of confidence is deeply humbling, and it tells me we are doing right by you and your loved ones. Thank you for placing your faith in us. And this support isn’t intangible. Thanks to the growth we’ve experienced this year, we can finally make one of my long-term goals a reality. In the spirit of giving, it is my pleasure to announce that we’re rolling out our VIP client program. More information will be arriving in your mailbox soon, but suffice to say, this is exciting news! We’ll be able to provide even more services and support than ever before at a level I wouldn’t have thought possible at the outset of this firm. This is our way of taking the good fortune we’ve received and paying it forward. In recent years, we’ve made a big push to truly build a community around our firm, and a big part of that comes from reinvesting in the people who seek out our services. As we move toward 2020, we’ll continue to expand and improve upon the ways we can help you and your loved ones.

So, here’s to you and the relationship we’ve built together. My team and I will continue to provide the guidance and support you’ve come to expect from us, to give you the peace of mind you deserve. That way, we can all sit down and enjoy the company of our loved ones and focus on peace and joy.

Cheers,

CELEBRATING GIVINGTUESDAY

Supporting the People You Believe In

November is usually all about Thanksgiving, but it isn’t the only holiday that encourages generosity. Giving Tuesday is a phenomenal celebration in which millions of people from across the globe are inspired to spend 24 hours giving back to the communities they love. ORIGIN AND GOAL GIVING Tuesday is celebrated every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and this year, the holiday lands on Dec. 3! It was established in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation and NewYork’s 92nd Street Y as a response to consumer-driven holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The purpose of the holiday was to spread the spirit of giving, not only for the people in our nation but individuals across the world. The goal is “to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day and touches every person on the planet.” TECHNOLOGY AT ITS BEST Through the use of social media and technology, the organization hopes to encourage and spread generosity on a global scale using the hashtag #GivingTuesday. The website states that “... technology and social media could be used to make generosity go viral; that people fundamentally want to give and talk about giving.” Through massive social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the individuals and

companies participating in Giving Tuesday can spread their missions and messages all over the world, encouraging others to do the same. HOWYOU CAN CELEBRATE Now is the perfect opportunity to support your community and the causes you believe in. The best part of this holiday is that “giving” doesn’t just refer to donating money. People can give back by volunteering their

time to help a nonprofit business, donating goods and food, or just buying a stranger some lunch. Even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact.

If you’re interested in participating in Giving Tuesday, get together with your friends, family, sports team members, or neighbors to brainstorm on how you can give back. To learn more about how you can participate, visit GivingTuesday.org .

THIRD THURSDAY

NOV. 21 The End Is Near! Actions You Should Think About Taking Before the End of the Year DEC. 19 We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Christmas Extravaganza. JAN. 16 Starting the Year Off on the Right Foot Join us at noon on Facebook Live or catch the podcast at ThirdThursday30.com.

It’s a long night for Greg DuPont, dealing with the aftermath of his abduction by – and escape from – Sparkles and Stupid Gandalf. From the moment he left them in the darkness by the river squealing away in their stolen van, he wondered what was so important about getting him there in the first place. If they were looking to harm him, it would have been simpler to do it right there in his driveway. But it’s not lost on him that the river is where the beekeeper was found. They must have been trying to scare him, send him a warning. But a warning about what?

PLANNING FOR LIFE INSURANCE

Life insurance is a great way to look after your loved ones. You can support them in life with the confidence that they will not be left out in the cold after you’re gone. A big part of this peace of mind stems from the fact that proceeds from a life insurance policy will be tax-free — giving your beneficiaries the full benefit of your policy. But this “fact” isn’t exactly set in stone. Without proper planning, your life insurance may subject your entire estate to higher taxes. EXCEPTIONSTOTHE RULE Normally, death proceeds are not considered taxable income to your beneficiaries. However, if at the time of your death your estate is your designated beneficiary , this rule no longer applies. The same is true if you retained incidents of ownership in your policy, such as the right to any cash values, the naming of beneficiaries, and the right to take out policy loans. In either case, the proceeds of your policy will likely be included in your estate for federal estate tax purposes. WHYTHIS HAPPENS There are a few limited reasons why you would name your estate as the beneficiary to your own life insurance policy, or else retain incidence of ownership. Primarily, you would choose to do this when you have the need for a complex distribution of the proceeds from your policy. For example, you may have children from a previous marriage you want to support, along with your current spouse. However, it’s far more common for an estate to be listed as a beneficiary accidentally . A COSTLY MISTAKE Many proceeds wind up getting assigned to a policyholder’s estate because the holder simply didn’t update their paperwork.

When a named beneficiary dies before the policyholder, most plans default back to their estate. Many people simply forget to update their plan after their beneficiary passes, leaving their loved ones to pick up the pieces once they’re gone.

If you haven’t reviewed your life insurance policy for some time, it never hurts to dust it off and ensure all the information still fits your goals.

Stay in a Real Castle PAGE 4

CARCASSONNE THE REAL MAGIC KINGDOM Every year, tourists flock to Disney’s “Magic Kingdom” and marvel at Cinderella’s iconic castle. As fun as it is to see this Florida-based attraction, it would be even more magical to step back in time and visit a real medieval citadel. What if you could walk the same ramparts as Roman legionnaires and climb the same towers as French kings? If this idea gives you goosebumps, pack your bags for Carcassonne, France. A four-hour train ride from Paris, towering above the rolling vineyards of southern France, you’ll find one of the most intact, accessible castles in Europe. With sweeping, concentric walls and 53 elegant towers, the Cité de Carcassonne is a breathtaking sight. Once an impenetrable border fortress between the kingdoms of France and Aragon, the gates now stand open to anyone curious enough to walk its cobblestone streets. In fact, you can stay in the ancient city yourself. The five-star Hotel de la Cité Carcassonne occupies a former bishop’s palace and overlooks the inner ramparts of the fortress. With medieval tapestries and gorgeous woodwork in the hotel’s interior, you’ll feel like you’re living among French royalty. Of course, if you’d prefer lodging with the commoners, plenty of quaint bed- and-breakfasts exist just across the Aude river.

With rustic cafes, fresh crepes, and bustling crowds making their way down the twisting cobblestone streets, the surface-level experience of Carcassonne would be enticing to anyone wanting to explore the French countryside. But for those who want to delve into the history of this storied castle, grand narratives await you. Just walking the walls of Carcassonne paints a picture of the past. While the outer fortifications were built by Louis IX and Phillip III, a section of the inner wall is far older. The red brick used in this part of the construction dates back to before the existence of France itself. Roman troops first fortified the hillside town around 100 BCE, giving every stone of this site a story to tell.

If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing medieval life for yourself, your adventure awaits in Carcassonne.
