A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

KEY SCHOOL DATES

Following the Easter break, it has been lovely to welcome students back for the Summer term. I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the break and find time to rest and recuperate ready for a really important term. I know that our students in Years 11 and 13 have been working incredibly hard preparing for their terminal GCSE and A Level

assessments. The sixth form centre was a hive of activity over the holidays as students attended subject revision workshops and the exams have now begun in earnest with GCSE Art and Language Speaking exams this week. On Wednesday evening the results of the Kingston and Richmond Youth Parliament were announced at York House and I am delighted to share the news that Alexa M Year 9, Annabelle R Year 9, Daisy J Year 8, Tamira R Year 8 and Amber P Year 7 were successfully elected. A huge congratulations to all of them. They worked incredibly hard, not only on creating their manifestos but also developed their communication skills persuading others to vote for them. This week some of you may have read a news article about a doctor visiting the UK to facilitate a webinar/intervention in London for autistic children. The treatment the individual is proposing to undertake is a procedure involving the possible extraction and transfer of bone marrow/spinal fluid to the child’s brain matter by injection. We are aware that there are a lot of people out there advocating ‘miracle cures’, however the practices being advocated by this doctor would constitute harmful and illegal practices. For your information, advice from health is captured on the NHS website page ‘Treatments that are not recommended for autism’ - it provides information about fake and harmful treatments and how to report them.

April is Stress Awareness Month. As exam season approaches quickly, we know it can be particularly stressful! We would like to remind parents of students in Years 10-13, particularly, of the in person workshop on supporting your children with exam stress. It will take place at school on Wednesday 24 April from 6.30-7.30pm. You can register your interest here. Additionally, the Charlie Waller Trust is running some webinars this month on the following topics: Supporting young people experiencing thoughts of suicide Tuesday 23 April 12pm- 1.30pm. Anxiety in young people – spotting the signs and supportive strategies Thursday 25 April 6pm-7.30pm. You can find out more and sign up for either of the webinars here. Alternatively, browse their selection of resources on a range of topics for parents and carers, which includes short videos on Managing Stress in the Modern World.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

This term we have a few different things occurring. I know that a Year 8 football tournament is in the works as well as a range of different events and clubs. Due to popular demand Mr Reynolds is starting his Ultimate Frisbee Club again. The Frisbee club is great for any student wanting to try something new, I am looking forward to attending some practices myself! With it being Summer Term students are reminded that we move to ‘Out Days’. Unless the weather is poor, students are expected to be outside of the school using the fields. I encourage students to get outside and be active at lunchtimes. I think that is the best way to enjoy your scheduled break times. If students are after any sporting equipment, let me know and I am happy to arrange something to be borrowed.

Congratulations to 8EFR who are leading the way with a staggering 106 points this week on the epraise leaderboard. It is a close competition for second and third place, with 8PWA collecting 68 points and 8SGZ not far behind with 65 points. Well done to the top three tutor groups and keep up the good work everyone!

Looking forward we have the Year 8 RE trip coming up where students will be attending a buddhist temple. We have four trips and in the past the day-out has been a great success as students are able to build upon what they have learned in their RE classes. We were able to have such a great experience at our Drama trip earlier in the year, I hope our students make another great presentation of our school.

A final reminder that students should be in appropriate uniform for the Summer term. A reminder that fake nails and false eyelashes are not a part of Waldegrave’s uniform policy.

MR SWEENEY, HEAD OF YEAR 8

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ by Suzanne Collins

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the prequel to the popular Hunger games series. This book follows the story of a young President Snow (or Corialanus Snow, as he is called in the book). The story features the 11th Hunger games and focuses on the surprising talent of District 12’s tribute, Lucy Gray. If you like the dystopian genre and lots of action, this book is a ‘must read’! To me, the themes of friendship and betrayal were very strongly portrayed. I liked how the story progressed and the very shocking ending really stayed with me. With the release of the movie last year you can watch it, too!
