MAY 19 Rejoice in Him "Y ef I will rejoice in the Lord, 1 will joy in the God o f my salvation” (Hab. 3:18). Though the fig tree shall not blossom, Neither fruit be in the vine; Olive fail and fields be barren, Cut off oxen, flocks, and kine; Yet rejoice in God your Saviour, Let your mind on Him be stayed; You can trust Him in the sunshine; Oh, trust Jesus in the shade. — E d it h L. H e n n e s s a y . MAY 20 Finding Rest “T ake my y oke upon you, and learn o f me . . . and y e shall find rest unto your souls" (Matt. 11:29). His yoke speaks of service—not forced service under the threatening eye of a cruel taskmaster, but willing cooperation with One who is “meek and lowly in heart,” whose “yoke is easy” and whose “burden is light.” The true yokefellow of such a

Have I been steadily pressing toward the mark of God’s high calling, or have I loitered along the road and lost interest in the goal? I ask myself, and I ask you, this question very solemnly: Do my character and con- duct justify the death of Christ for me, or are my actions such that I am a grief to Him?—W . MAY 16 Growth in Grace "But the God of all grace, who hath call ed us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that y e have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, set tle you” (1 Pet. 5:10). Perfection is not reached by an easy flight of a single day, but by many days and months and years of arduous toil. With all our modem developments we have map ped no airways to character. We must fol low the old, much-traveled, rough-going highway. That is the way God has plan ned it. If we had our way, we would gather the fruit when the blossoms appear, but we must wait and work, first for "the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear.” W e must grow in grace, and growth takes time and requires care. —Brethren Evangelist. MAY 17 The Olivets of Life “W hen Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples" (John 18:1). Some can have their time of prayer in the early morning, but for others it is im possible. There is no special virtue in any particular time, but there is value in choos ing the time when you can best come be fore God without interruption, and for a set period retire into the Holy of Holies of your life, with your Bible, and pray. I knew one old woman whose wash-tub was her Olivet. She used to scrub the dirt out of the clothes, and praise God for the pre cious blood which had washed her and made her whiter than snow. — L io n e l B. F l e t c h e r . MAY 18 The Glory of the Impossible "But y e shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusa lem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part o f the earth” (Acts 1 : 8 ) . Eleven men standing on Mount Olivet, ignorant, unlearned, feeble in faith, falter ing in trust—"when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.” And to them came the great commission, and in less than half a century they had accom plished the impossible, and covered the
