the world o f sin, and o f righteousness, and o f judgment” (John 16:8). He, the Holy Spirit, searches the con sciousness and the conscience of a man far better than ever the man himself is capable of doing. He goes down into the hidden depths . . . So He comes to convict, and while the preacher is speaking about Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost is speaking ahout sin. I never trouble to speak about sin, be cause I know if I am speaking to the uncon verted about the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost undertakes to talk to them about sin, and He can do it far better than I can.—T . M . B am ber . "Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness” (Psa. 143:1). I know not by what methods rare, But this I know, God answers prayer. I know not ¡when He sends the word That tells us fervent prayer is heard. I know it cometh soon or late; Therefore we need to pray and wait. I know not if the blessing sought Will come in just the guise I thought, I leave my prayers with Him alone Whose will is wiser than my own. — E liza M. H ic k o k . MAY 25 Your Taproot “W hereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature . . . And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue” (2 Pet. 1:4, 5 ). Faith is the taproot of the Christian life. It goes deep into Jesus, out from whom come all the promises for growth and fruit age. The fruit tree roots deep down. When leaves and blossoms appear in the spring, we know the root is active; then we may indeed expect fruit. When the life shows forth patience, lovingkindness, self-control, and a Christlikeness, then we know it roots down deep in Jesus. If not—well, there’s a big question, to say the least. — S . D. Master finds a deep, quiet soul-rest in service. Is such a rest of soul shown in my Christian life and ministry? In yours? Do those who daily meet us understand from our face and manner that we are rest- fully serving a kind, loving Master? Or do we misrepresent His "yoke” and “burden” by being fretted and pressed with a burden of work that gives an impression of rushing self-imposed business, not of divinely given rest of soul? — G eorge H. S ev ille . MAY 21 A Heart of Love "How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? (Hosea 11:8). The deepest meaning in the mystery of redemption is here expressed. . . . The only sufficient reason for redemption, and the only sufficient impulse for suffering, is love. . . . The holiness of God might have been vindicated, and the last demand of His righteousness satisfied, by the absolute an nihilation of everything that had failed. . . God’s heart of love compelled Him to make a way back to His home and heart for sin ning man, even though the process was one of infinite cost. —G. C am pbell M organ . MAY 22 Stop Hurrying "In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength” (Isa. 30:15). The Bible seldom speaks, and certainly never its deepest, sweetest words, to those who always read in a hurry. Nature can only tell her secrets to such as will sit still in her sacred temple, till their eyes lose the glare of earthly glory, and their ears are attuned to her voice. And shall Revelation do what Nature cannot? Never! The man who shall win the blessedness of hearing the voice of divine wisdom must watch daily at her gates, and wait at the posts of her doors.— F .
