I joined CHART when I was 11 years old. You might think I’m kidding, but when I was 11, I had an assignment in my 7 th grade English class to create a photo report on any topic I wanted. I chose to write mine on—wait for it—how to make a bed. Complete with my younger sister as the model demonstrating the steps at my direction. It’s like I was destined to someday be in a hospitality career where I would develop training programs that would teach people, among other things, how to make a bed.

I have no idea why my parents chose to stash this particular childhood gem in my memory box all those years ago, but I’m delighted that they did. Maybe the A+ I received on the report was a convincing clue to what my future held. I didn’t know it then, but it’s clear to me now that CHART was my people—at least in spirit—long before I ever knew you were going to be my people. It took me 20 years after that assignment to find this incredible organization, and in the years since, I have cherished every moment of the learning, sharing, growing, and caring that I’ve shared with all of you. It has been an absolute honor to give back with seven years on the CHART board, and as my term as your President draws to a close, my wish for all of you is that you carry the legacy forward. Learn from each other, Share your discoveries and best practices, Grow your careers, and above all, Care about each other and the world around you. And maybe encourage the people in your life who show an inclination toward hospitality training that it is the most rewarding of careers. Even if they are only in 7 th grade.
