NADOA INSTITUTE 2018 – MORE THAN YEE HAW AND PICKUP TRUCKS

The NADOA Organization celebrated its 45th Annual Institute in 2018, which was held in Nashville, TN at the Gaylord Opryland Resort. If you did not attend, it was more than Country music and beer drinking. The list of classes that were available this year was the largest I have seen since becoming a member of NADOA. Classes were available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We listened to Attorneys, a CEO, Presidents, Landmen, and fellow Division Order Analysts present many topics such as Advanced Calculations; How to use Pivot Tables; How to deal with Unclaimed Property; and my personal favorite, I Am Not a Lawyer, But I Play One on the Telephone. There were 43 class sessions and 3 keynote speakers, which together provided quite a broad variety of subjects. I appreciate the time each speaker put into their presentations. Some of the speakers bribed the audience with gifts…. No names mentioned here…. Some of the speakers made us laugh. All of the speakers made us think about how we could use the information to work smarter, more efficiently at our jobs, how to deal with royalty owners who may have a burr in their saddle and how current legislation will affect our jobs in the future. I believe this event is well worth the investment to your company. It provides

knowledge and training that is focused on Division Order Analysts. There are few opportunities like this where so many experts are gathered in one place and offer their knowledge to members of NADOA. Ask your supervisor if you can be included in this training next year or the year after. There were times that we were able to socialize by doing some boot scootin’, playing golf or catching up with friends such as Brenda Dickey, Ida LeMaster, Roxanne Heath, Josh Lowery, Steve Smith and many others. You can also make new contacts or finally meet someone face to face that you may have talked to over the phone for years. The possibilities are endless to network and make a connection with someone in the Division Order field. I want to thank the NADOA Board for offering scholarships to this year’s Institute. I was a fortunate cowboy to win the grand prize. To me it was definitely a YEE HAW moment when I found out I had won. Attending the NADOA Institute is rewarding and I learn several things each time I attend. Next year, plan to make your own memories in Fort Worth, Texas, by attending the 46th Annual NADOA Institute. I promise it will be more than Country Music and beer drinking. Dale Bender, CDOA
