2018 Q4

2018 NADOA Institute Scholarship As a scholarship winner, I have been asked to write about my experience at the NADOA 45th Annual Institute. To begin with the resort was crazy. From the second you walked in there was a jungle and a waterfall surrounding the courtyard but as you continued to walk deeper into the jungle it opened to boat rides, restaurants, music hall, and finally the Convention Center. There was so much going on that you did not need to leave the resort at all, even though it did take about 15 minutes to walk to the Convention Center and you were still in the resort. Since the classes and panels started early Wednesday I decided to arrive a day early and take in all that Nashville had to offer. This was my first time in Nashville and I was not disappointed. The first thing I did was head to Nash- ville’s famous hot chicken restaurant Hattie B’s. A line had already formed 45 minutes prior to the doors even being opened and the wait was worth every minute. From there I studied up on my Nashville history by taking a tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Just as a side note, you can make your own music video or record a short song in one of their sound booths. Wednesday involved a lot of Escheat classes. Hearing about the current trends, new laws, and attending open panel discussions I was able to pick up new skills to apply in my every day processes. Even as the serious discussions of Escheat ensued it was a little hard to focus due to all the hooting and hollering coming through the wall from April Luedecke’s “Down the Rabbit Hole We Go” semi- nar. The Escheat panel was the most dynamic because our hosts had no idea of the questions that we were going to ask. Needless to say, Pam Wentz, William King, Gary Jo- seph, Ann Fulmer, and Lucretia Jones collectively knocked it out of the park. After so many hours of Escheat I had to take a breather, so I went to the Advanced Calcula- tions class with Eli Murray. Eli was able to not only make Multi-Section Well calculations interesting, she made it competitive by offering a Winner Take All quiz for a sur- prise gift card. To end the night, I took a walk around the Grand Ole Opry and tried the infamous Tex-Mex restau- rant Chuy’s at Opry Mills Mall!

and Gas plus how to be an active positive advocate for our industry. I was able to pick up some new tips and tricks on prioritizing through Luanne Johnson’s “Prioritization in the Digital Age” course, expanded my mind set on how to handle Owner Relations from Melody Baker and Pa- mela Daniels, took lots of notes in Leadership by Pamela J. Wentz, and finished the day with learning about Well- bore Assignments with Frank Hinton. The classes were able to assist me in my day to day activities and change my thought process as to working smarter and not harder. After the six cups of coffee, eight hours of note taking, and three breaks for networking it was amazing to get to go to Ole Red to wind down and enjoy some great BBQ, dancing, and listening to live music. After the recharge at Ole Red I was excited to attend the new set of classes. I attended “Deducting Post-Production Costs from Fee Royalty” by Patrick Fitzgerald, “Energy Transactions: How They Affect Division Order Analysts” with Kacie Bevers & Andrew Graham, and “Conveyanc- ing: What Does That Mean?” by Matthew Schlensker. All three classes offered insight as to what to specifically look for in the conveyances and title on a day to day basis. The insight from Patrick Fitzgerald stuck out the most due to me dealing with post production costs in Pennsylvania. The class focused on interpretation of specific language, clarity in ambiguous language, and implied convents while providing case studies. Between the walks on Broadway, music coming out of ev- ery corner, the buy one pair of boots and get two free, and the ambiance of the Gaylord Hotel, I enjoyed my Nash- ville experience and cannot wait to return. I look forward to seeing what NADOA has planned for the classes next year. Overall, the NADOA 45th Annual Institute was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to go the next event.

On Thursday I hit the ground running by listening to Jason Lucas talk about the past to present history of Oil
