Music Brings Us Together

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and get back to so many of the activities that we all miss when the weather is cold and snowy. For some (including me), that might mean hiking or gardening or checking out the county fair. But there’s something else that summertime brings that I look forward to every year: outdoor concerts! Music has a unique ability to reach each of us individually. Have you ever heard a particular song and been instantly transported back to a dance with a high school sweetheart, or a drive in that first car, or a long-ago vacation? Music can lift us up, and music can comfort us when we’re down. It can be appreciated absolutely anywhere and anytime. But there’s another quality that music has, which is almost magical: music unites us. Songs become the soundtrack of our collective lives. They speak to us on a group level. The songs of our past and the songs we love now are common threads that connect us to each other. There’s no better way to experience that connection than to attend a concert. I’ve always felt that connection at music events, but it really hit home late last summer, when I attended my first “post-COVID” concert. The level of excitement was palpable from the moment when I joined the crowds walking from the parking lot. Strangers were chatting with each other as they made their way toward the entrance. People offered to take photos when they saw others struggling

to take a good selfie. Everyone I encountered was patient and kind. It was obvious that we were all thrilled to be back together again. Then, when the music began, it was nothing short of joyous. We all sang along. We all danced. We all felt the percussion in our chests. We all waved our phone flashlights in time with the slow songs. And for a couple of hours, I felt that I had rediscovered a link that had become so distant during our pandemic years. That connection is impossible to miss when you’re joining 20,000 people singing along with Maroon 5’s “Maps” or Journey’s “Faithfully.” I am especially lucky to have a young adult son who enjoys music just as much — or more — than I do. Through the years, we’ve gone from sharing lullabies to marching band competitions to concerts. He was with me at that concert last August, and at a couple more since then. I love watching him experience the collective joy of the audience when the bands play everyone’s favorites. And it’s been fun telling him how (back in my day) the phone flashlight used to be a cigarette lighter that burned your thumb as you held the flame high through the entire song. Fortunately, I live in a town that has wonderful monthly outdoor concerts downtown in the brickyard during the summer. I’m also not too far from a couple of major cities that get great groups on tour. Local parks in many towns host concerts

as well, from orchestra “pops” concerts to bluegrass band festivals. Whatever your taste in music, there’s something out there for you to enjoy and to share with your community. So grab your partner, your best friend, or your kiddo and get outside to a concert nearby. Take in some fresh air and some music and enjoy the connection with your neighbors. Maybe I’ll see you there!

Use alcohol responsibly. If you are planning to drink at an event, make sure you have a safe ride home. If someone from your group is driving, make sure they stay sober and get a rideshare if needed. Don’t overconsume and lose your sense of the surroundings. This can lead you to dangerous situations. Alternate drinking water with alcohol to stay hydrated and to avoid becoming ill. Watch your kids. If you are attending a concert or festival with your children, make sure you keep an eye on them. Never let them wander on their own. Write your phone number on their arm and inside their clothing in case they get separated from you. Create an emergency plan so if you do get separated, your child knows where they can find you. Be extra careful in a crowd. If you find yourself in a mosh pit or within a large group of people, be aware of your surroundings. Protect your head and stay on your feet. If you drop something, do not immediately pick it up. You could be pushed to the ground and trampled. If the crowd closes in on you, conserve your oxygen and your energy. Screaming and struggling can lead to a worse situation during a crowd surge. Attending concerts can be a fun experience for people of all ages. If a concert or festival is on your to-do list this summer, we hope you have a safe and enjoyable experience!

Attending a Concert or Festival This Summer? Follow These Safety Tips!

As the summer season kicks off, many Americans will be attending concerts and music festivals to see their favorite bands and artists. When you go to these shows, you expect that security will have everything under control so you can safely enjoy the experience. However, recent concert and festival tragedies have proven you can never be too cautious when attending a performance. Thankfully, you can do a few things to safely enjoy the experience. Take proper precautions. When you attend a performance, people will likely be dancing, jumping, and moving along to the music. Make sure you wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet. Avoid wearing any expensive jewelry and carry your phone, money, and other essentials in your front pockets to avoid theft.

BREAKING THE HABIT HOW TO CUT YOUR KIDS’ SCREEN TIME

Spend more time together. Giving your children your undivided attention is incredibly valuable, even if it’s only for short periods. Figure out how you can create more face time (not FaceTime). Start conversations and play games to spend time together as a family. Even better, get

The science is clear: Too much screen time can lead to kids experiencing developmental delays, poor sleep, and weight gain. And yet, kids love those small glowing devices. To keep your children healthy, you need to find a way to set limits. But how can you create rules around their favorite pastimes without causing a lot of drama? Create realistic rules. You know your family best. Review the American Academy of Pediatrics’ best practices for screen time online, and then consider what’s both healthy and doable. Maybe the ultimate screen time spent will be more than the experts suggest, but an improvement is better than no change. Determine usage limits and establish device-free times. Then create clear expectations and consequences, and don’t back down from enforcing them. Take the devices away. It is not a punishment, though it might feel like one to your kids at first. But it’s actually helping them by removing the temptation. Your elementary school child will be less likely to get sucked into a YouTube hole, and your teen won’t send “just one” text at dinner if the device isn’t right there. Keep these devices out of sight during no-use time, and put them away once your kids have met their daily limits. In the end, it will make things easier.

outside! If you’re willing to spend time with them and act a little silly, your kids will have more fun kicking a ball around rather than playing Roblox. Better yet, you’ll both get some exercise.

Finally, consider the example you’re setting. It’s hard to blame kids for their screen addiction when adults also have trouble prying themselves away from laptops, tablets, and phones. Think about how you can reduce your own screen time and consider installing an app that tracks your usage like StayFree or Social Fever. You might be surprised at how much time you spend staring at a little screen — and be inspired to cut back.

We are inspired by the grit and determination of musician Dave Stirtzinger, the lead singer of North Central’s own, The Red Ball Jets band! Many of you are probably familiar with Dave and his high-energy band. They play a wide variety of top dance and party songs, including classic rock, R&B, modern, and alternative rock cover tunes. When Dave suffered a serious injury to his leg in a motorcycle accident, he wasn’t going to let that stop him from doing what he loves to do. He figured out a way to get on stage with the band by sitting on a stool while he sang. Dave’s favorite song lyric is found in the Journey song “Faithfully” — “Loving a music man ain’t always what it’s supposed to be. Oh, girl, you stand by me. I’m forever yours. Faithfully.” Dave finds inspiration from a quote by author Jodi Picoult — “Life can change in an instant; don’t be so worried about the future that you forget to celebrate what you have right now.” If you want to see the band in concert, go to their website, RBJets.com, where you will find their summer schedule. The Red Ball Jets will be playing at Hale’s Harley Davidson on June 3 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. INSPIRATION CORNER DAVID STIRTZINGER

OUR FAVORITE PASTA SALAD

INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup lemon juice from 2 lemons • 1/2 tsp grated lemon zest • 1 medium clove garlic (minced or put through garlic press) • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes, or to taste • 1 tbsp plus 3/4 tsp salt • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1 lb short, bite-sized pasta such as fusilli, farfalle, or penne • Roasted or grilled vegetables of choice • Olives and herbs, if desired This pasta salad is great anytime, but it is the perfect dish to take to a picnic because it is not made with mayo. You can make many variations depending on what you like, what is in season, and what you have on hand. The possibilities are endless. We love to add eggplant, roasted peppers, onions, and basil.

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large pot over high heat, bring 4 qts of water to boil. 2. In a large bowl, whisk lemon juice, zest, garlic, red pepper flakes and 3/4 tsp of salt; whisk in 1/2 cup oil in a slow, steady stream until smooth. 3. To boiling water, add pasta and 1 tbsp salt. Cook until pasta is al dente then drain. Whisk dressing again to blend. Add hot pasta, and cooled vegetables, olives, and herbs. Toss to mix thoroughly. Cool to room temperature. Adjust seasonings and serve. Salad can be covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated for 1 day; return to room temperature before serving. Optional Additions: • Roasted or grilled vegetables like eggplant, sweet bell pepper, fennel, and/or red or yellow onion. To roast, heat oven to 400 F.
