Garrett says her first major challenge as a mom came during the pandemic, when she had to navigate life with a newborn in a world that had completely shut down. No visitors, no help, no normal. She says chal- lenges these days look a lot smaller and yet are just as exhausting, from potty training to full-blown sibling rivalry. But the joys have come in those same ordi- nary moments. Garrett says having kids has made time slow down in a way she never expected—like stopping on the sidewalk for 10 minutes because someone discovered a line of ants that needed investigating. The best parenting advice Garrett says she has received is simple: Be present. “There are so many distractions competing for your attention right now, and it’s so easy to just grab your phone instead of actually being in the moment with your kids,” she says. “I have to catch myself on this constantly.” For other parents, Garrett stresses to give your family a plan before you need one—not after. Name guardians for your kids now, so if anything ever happens, it’s your choice and not a judge’s deciding who raises them. She also advises parents to get term life insurance when you’re young and healthy, because coverable may be more affordable at this stage and it means your family is pro- tected no matter what. Garrett says her favorite parts of raising kids in Colorado are the people and the outdoors. She loves the sense of community and says it’s the kind of place where she wants her children to grow up.
