ZACH
THERE HAVE BEEN moments when people assumed I wasn’t Jewish based on my appearance. It usually comes up in conversation with a friend or someone I’m getting to know. I’ll mention something about growing up Jewish or about my family, and I often get one of two reactions: Oh, you don’t look Jewish, or the opposite, Oh, really? Now that you say it, I can see it. It’s never malicious, but they always make me aware of the assumptions peo- ple still carry about what a Jewish person is “supposed” to look like. For me, it’s a reminder that Jewish identity is so much more diverse and layered than most people realize.
