MUSIC / FUSION Immortal Songs
GUITARIST and composer Jon Madof anchors this trio of heavy-hitting con- temporary Jewish musicians from New York. With their help, he revisits and reinvents themes and elements of previous projects he collaborated on, called Rashanim and Zion80 , where Carlebach-style melodies met Afrobeat-esque
orchestral foundation. The album marks his return to Tza- dik, a record label established in 1995 in New York by John Zorn, the celebrated avant-garde Radical Jewish composer and cultural fixture, with whom Madof has also collaborat- ed previously. Completing Madof’s trio are bassist Yoshie

Fruchter (also from Sandcatchers) and drummer Nate Rappaport (of Zusha), who together deliver compositions harnessing diverse stylistic influences, from avant-garde jazz and experimental music to post-rock, punk, and be- yond. The resulting sound, steeped in soulful Jewish expression, now begets this debut disc named for a concept of eternity. Jonathan Rothman
