Creating Space for Transit In Transit-Supportive Areas, the preferred way to enhance transit performance is through dedicated transit lanes, which provide the strongest improvements in travel time, reliability, and legibility. Dedicated lanes, as shown in Figure 1.38 , give transit a clear operational advantage, supporting mode shift and improving service quality in ways that benefit a broad range of riders. Where ROW, surrounding land uses, or contextual constraints make dedicated transit lanes difficult to implement, the City may apply targeted geometric or technology- based interventions to improve intersection performance and reduce delay. These tools allow transit vehicles to move more efficiently within mixed traffic and can be deployed as standalone improvements or as incremental steps toward future dedicated-lane investments.
