National Guide Right Chairman Kevin L. Burnett kicks off a session during the National Guide Right Student Leadership Forum.
The National Guide Right Student Leadership Forum held during Kappa Alpha Psi’s 84 th Grand Chapter Meet- ing commenced on Sunday, July 28, 2019 and culminated on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 in Philadelphia, PA. The National Guide Right Student Leader- ship Forum featured a variety of panel discussions to include video reporting, time management, group dynamics, project management, team manage- ment, leadership, mental health and technology. The National Guide Right Student Leadership Forum concluded with the Student of the Year Competi- tion. On Sunday, July 28, 2019, the Forum began with a special welcome to the 85 Kappa Leaguers, followed by the roll call of chapters, remarks by Na- tional Guide Right Chairman Brother Kevin L. Burnett and a compelling ice-breaker by Brother Jerry Ward. Founded in 1922, Guide Right (and its affiliate Kappa League) is the oldest and most successful African Ameri- can male mentorship program in the U.S. Designing Day One around this
premise set the tone for the rest of the events. Day two began with a Video Reporting Workshop with Brother John Mar- shall Jones whereby Kappa Leaguers created their own stories through group efforts and group participation. YouTube was the media format that Kappa Leaguers and focused on. Ear- lier, Kappa League TV was launched on YouTube to great acclaim. Brother Jones trained the Kappa Leaguers on the power of branding and creating their own narrative through the utiliza- tion of Kappa League TV. Brother Jones stated “Kappa League TV, the CNN ® for young Black men, is a news channel featuring Kappa Leaguers reporting on the Kappa League mentorship program and all of the positive things that Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and its Kappa Leaguers are doing in our communi- ties. It is a living library of the good works of our fraternity, as well as, a training program for the next genera- tion of African American storytellers.”
Kappa League has three specific goals moving forward: 1. To get 10,000 subscribers to Kappa League TV (youtube.com/c/KappaLe- agueTV) by Dec. 2020. 2. To double the number of Kappa Leaguers from 7000 to 14000 by July 2022. 3. To maintain that participation level for 10 years and create a pipeline for every Kappa Leaguer to gain admit- tance to an HBCU, giving us 140,000 young men admitted to college from our program by 2032. Brother Jones was followed by Brother Dr. Samuel Odom who hosted an in- teractive dialogue and discussion with the cohort on the tenets of leadership. Participants established a work- ing definition of leadership, which referenced several iconic examples of leadership such as 65 th Secretary of State & General (Ret.) Colin L. Powell, NBA Champion & Superstar Brother Wilton “Wilt” Chamberlain, NFL Star & Rhodes Scholar, Brother
