Iván Garcia: Summa Cum Laude—For High Academic Achievement at The Illinois State University Chapter, the Kappa Alpha of Kappa Alpha Psi ®

B rother Garcia is a Fall 2016 initiate of the Illinois State University Chapter, the Kappa Alpha of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He served as the chapter’s Vice Polemarch and also lent a helping hand by coordi- nating community service opportunities, and social and developmental pro- grams. He was an involved student leader on campus serving in several different organizations; President of the Black and Latino Male Movement, Resident Assistant for University Housing Services, served as the Junior Representative on the Student Advisory Board, and was a Mentor for the M.A.S.A.I. Mentor-

ing Program. Furthermore, he maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout his college career, graduat- ing Summa Cum Laude. He is currently a second- year graduate student at Indiana University pursu- ing his master’s degree in Speech-Language Pa- thology. He is also in the bilingual-track program, focusing on providing competent services to cul- turally diverse populations. One of his favorite gradu- ate experiences has been providing bilingual Spanish- English speech/language evaluations and services for children at the Indianapolis Public Schools. Post-graduation, he will pursue a career in an

educational setting with a diverse population. After gaining experience, he hopes to work in private practice; providing bilingual Spanish-English services throughout his career. He will use his career as a platform to advocate for underrepresented popula- tions. His altruistic nature and desire to help others fuels his love for this pro- fession. It is evident that Iván’s young life epitomizes Achievement and that he sees obstacles as oppor- tunities to achieve in spite of; not because of. We are thankful to Maria and Jose Garcia, Iván’s parents – for God’s most precious gift to You has been a blessing to

the Noble Clan of Kappa Alpha Psi. Therefore, let it be known that our Brother ex- hibits the five objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi and that his diamond embodies the characteristics of Founder Grant. He is a student of achievement, a leader among men, and a van- guard of excellence. Here's to Byron K. Armstrong Awardee and Guy L. Grant Awardee Iván Garcia! “...I'll use my platform to encourage men and women of color to achieve in spite of the hardships in our cur- rent America...I have failed many times but ultimately standing here before you has shown me that I can succeed and so can you.”
