2019 ELDER WATSON DIGGS AWARDS

I have heard Achievement defined as the quality and quantity of an individual’s body of work. As it pertains to our Noble Clan, this definition is fitting because for a Kappa man, achievement is our mandate. It is the rarified air in which we breathe. Every field of human endeavor is a Kappa man’s playground. It is the arenas in which we execute our excellence. Training for leadership is our mantra – we find ourselves in a constant state of duality; eternally teaching, steadfast in our learning. The quality and quantity of our work is measured by those that have transcended before us. We are the descendants of DIGGS in so much as we dare to achieve regardless the situation or circumstance. Named after our most revered founder, the Elder Watson Diggs award recognizes the outstand- ing contributions of our members. It embodies a legacy of GREATNESS – recognition of those who have overcome adversity in order to ADVANCE the fraternity. It is an honor we do not take lightly or bestow carelessly. Brother Diggs encapsulates the belief that only through adversity I can achieve. That no matter the obstacle, I can overcome. When I think of Brother Diggs I am reminded of the part of Invictus that states, “In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeoning’s of chance my head is bloody but unbowed.” Our most illustrious founder dedicated himself to the cause of ACHIEVE- MENT. It’s in his tireless footsteps we walk. It’s under his shining example we aspire. It’s because of him, we are NUPES! Distinguished guests, I submit to you that the men assembled before us have walked in the foot- steps of Diggs. They aimed high and achieved their goals. They have advanced our fraternity and in

so doing, we gather tonight to honor them. The 2019 Elder Watson Diggs Awardees are: 108 th Willie F. Brooks, Jr. 109 th John F. Burrell 110 th Edward Kennedy Glass, Jr.

111 th Robert W. Scales, Jr. 112 th Richard Lee Snow
