ON SE SOUVIENT DE L’ÉCOLE ST-BENOIT
Art is going to be an election issue for the October ballot in Prescott- Russell if the regional arts council has its way. “We’re really focused on calling out to the community in this election,” said Shanna Steals, president of the Prescott- Russell Arts Council (CAPRAC), during a phone interview August 27. CAPRAC has launched a campaign to make art and culture part of the election ballot issues that voters and municipal council candidates consider as the October 22 civic elections draw near. Steals noted that arts and culture is more than just paintings in a gallery or plays in a theatre. “It’s part of who we are,” she claimed. “It’s our legacy, it’s what we leave behind. It’s an economic driver as well. It helps attract people to tourism regions.” Part of CAPRAC’s “art as election issue” includes the upcoming Culture Days in Ontario, a three-day celebration at the end of September. Between then and now and during the weeks in October leading up to the election, CAPRAC and its members will push public aware- ness on the role of art and culture in a community. “It’s a call for people to remember, when they’re talking to candidates,” Steals added, “to ask them where they stand on it (art and culture). ” - Gregg Chamberlain
Des anciens de l’école St-Benoit, identifiée officiellement comme étant l’école séparée # 20 de Cambridge, se sont réunis sur le terrain de leur ancienne école récemment pour inaugurer une plaque commémorative de cette ancienne institution scolaire. L’école St-Benoit, qui était l’école de la 5 e concession de l’ancienne municipalité de Cambridge, a existé de 1899 à 1969. Elle était située sur le terrain de l’entreprise actuelle KB Media. À ses débuts, elle dispensait l’enseignement à 35 élèves puis, vers les années 1960, plus de 80 élèves ont fréquenté l’école St-Benoit. Les anciens qui ont participé à l’évènement gardent encore un souvenir bien frais dans leurs mémoires de cette institution scolaire qui a marqué leurs parcours de vie. Plusieurs anecdotes ont été partagées, le dernier procès-verbal d’une réunion de l’époque a été lu, les noms de chaque famille ayant fréquenté l’école ont été énumérés et la plaque commémorative a été bénite. On retrouve, ci-dessus, les membres organisateurs de l’évènement et responsables de la création du monument commémoratif, soit Bernard Boulerice, Bernadette Sirois, Reynald Boulerice, Rita Larocque, Reynald Millaire, Cécile Baker, Gérard Boulerice et Aline Brisson.
