Conviction and Coherence: The Ultimate Outcome
The 7C Leadership Compass does not conclude with a destination, but with a way of being: the harmonious integration of Conviction and Coherence. These two dimensions are not additional “Cs” to be mastered, but the ultimate and natural outcome of a deep commitment to the seven principles. They represent the culmination of the journey – the point at which leadership becomes an authentic expression of who you are.
Conviction is not stubbornness or rigidity – it is an inner compass that guides you through complexity and uncertainty, enabling you to adapt your strategies while remaining true to your core principles. The Trap of False Conviction Be careful not to confuse conviction with rigidity or epistemic arrogance. True conviction is accompanied by intellectual humility – the ability to say, “I was wrong,” when the facts change. As Keynes famously said: “When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?”
Conviction: The Inner Engine
“
Conviction is the deep, unwavering certainty that fuels your moral ambition. It is clarity about your core values and your “why” – your purpose as a leader. This inner force drives you to act with courage, to remain steady in the face of adversity, and to hold your ethical course even when external pressures push you to stray. Without conviction, the 7Cs remain just another set of management techniques; with it, they become the expression of a genuine commitment and a deeply rooted sense of purpose.
CONVICTION TRANSFORMS THE PRACTICE OF LEADERSHIP INTO A VOCATION. IT IS THE SOURCE OF THE ENERGY NEEDED TO PERSEVERE ON THE SPIRAL JOURNEY, EVEN WHEN THE PATH IS CHALLENGING. ʺ
