ANGUS SIMPSON

“This is my first and final warning. There won’t be another.”

My creative piece is the interior monologue of a man who is obsessed by music. From the start, there is an underlying sense of unease created by the manipulation of narrative tempo, stream of consciousness and rhetorical questions, all of which bring meaning. The story is similar to Murakami’s ‘The Kangaroo Communiqué’, written in a metafictional style that undercuts the piece itself by allowing us to quickly learn the traits and foibles of the narrator. My aim in the writing was to add a surrealistic element to a quotidian event, for example moving house, and thus create an image of suburban dystopia.
