Mother’s Day: Who’s Idea Was it Anyway?

ANNA JARVIS FOUNDER OF A HOLIDAY

The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother’s Day event at one of Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia. Following the success of her first Mother’s Day, Jarvis—who remained unmarried and childless her whole life—resolved to see her holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased toward

male achievements, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood. By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adoptedMother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President WoodrowWilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mother’s Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one’s mother or attending church services. But once Mother’s Day became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies and other merchants

also launched countless lawsuits against groups that had used the name “Mother’s Day,” eventually spending most of her personal wealth in legal fees. By the time of her death in 1948 Jarvis had disowned the holiday altogether, and even actively lobbied the government to see it removed from the American calendar. Luckily today we still celebrate Mother’s Day and keep the spirit of the holiday alive.

capitalized on its popularity. While Jarvis had initially worked with the floral industry to help raise Mother’s Day’s profile, by 1920 she had become disgusted with how the holiday had been commercialized. She outwardly denounced the transformation and urged people to stop buying Mother’s Day flowers, cards and candies. Jarvis eventually resorted to an open campaign against Mother’s Day profiteers, speaking out against confectioners, florists and even charities. She

Hello Friends, Happy Mother’s Day to all moms and grandmas! Mother’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year. For one, it usually means nice weather is here. Grass is lush green. Flowers are in bloom. And it’s a great time for a barbecue. But most of all.. It’s a time to pause, recognize, and appreciate the real superhero in our families. Our moms…our wives…our grandmas. Thank you mom… …for all the ways you selflessly care for us in ways only a mother could. …for all those sporting events you have sat through and always had something encouraging to yell. …for all those days you came home exhausted after working 8+ hours and still cooked us dinner. …for all those times you’ve given us grace and shown us what a woman of God looks like. Mother’s Day serves as a reminder for all the amazing things you do for us each and every day. Truthfully, every day should be Mother’s Day. Because every day you deserve to hear thank you and we love you! To all the moms out there, we thank you and we love you! Arlan Alburo, PT, MTC CEO, Co-Founder, OBTS …for all those times when we called, and you answered. …for all those letters and emails that helped encourage us.

Sincerely,

Arlan Alburo

PS-My mom’s name is Natividad. She is a retired school principal in the Philippines. She is my #1 fan…and is the reason I am who I am today. Thanks mom!

Do You KnowWhen to Plant Outside? After Mother’s Day? As many gardeners know, there’s a common

over for the year. However, the rule doesn’t take into account warmer climates or hardier plants, both of which can have different planting rules. There’s some truth to the Mother’s Day rule, but it’s best to take it for what it is: a general guideline.

rule of thumb that advises when it’s OK to start planting flowers and vegetables: You should hold off on planting until after Mother’s Day. Many people grew up hearing these words of advice from parents and grandparents who likely heard them from theirs. The guideline is an important reminder that early spring isn’t the best time to start planting most things, but is it a hard- and-fast rule that everyone should follow? Take a look at how much truth there is to the Mother’s Day guideline and how you can know when to start planting: When it comes to deciding when to plant flowers, vegetables, shrubs or anything else, what matters most is your particular area’s last frost date. That’s because, depending on the hardiness of the plant, gardening when temperatures still reach the 20s overnight could mean setting your garden up to fail. So, how does the Mother’s Day rule fit into that? Well, in many climate zones, Mother’s Day signifies late spring, or when night and morning frosts are almost (if not completely) The Mother’s Day Rule: Is There Truth to It?

Finding Your Last Frost Date

So how do you know exactly when to start planting flowers and vegetables? The best way to do this successfully is to find find your area’s last frost date by doing a little research online. The National Climatic Center Website has frost information for all states, so it’s a good starting point. Then, you should research the exact plants you wish to put in your garden. Determine when to plant each one based on the frost information you found. Quick tip: If you’re starting from seeds, the seed packets for both flowers and vegetables will have instructions that tell you when to plant them based on your area’s climate and frost dates. If you’re starting with seedlings or are transplanting plants, look them up online first.

What to Do If the Cold Comes Back

If you’ve planted tender or warm-weather crops a bit too early, or you have unexpected cold fronts that bring freezes, there are steps you can take to protect your garden. If you’re expecting an overnight frost, cover your garden with a sheet or light blanket and then a layer of plastic to insulate the garden with warmer air. Remove the coverings first thing in the morning, as soon as the temperatures are back to normal.

PATIENT SPOTLIGHTS

“I walk much better now!” “I was having problems walking with pain and balance when I first came to O+B Therapy for several years. They found several problems that were not previously addressed and treated them. I walk much better now. I highly recommend O+B Therapy for their individualized care!” - C. K.

“My balance is so much better!” “My experience here was great! Everyone was so helpful and kind. Before I came here I had vertigo problems along with balance issues. After therapy, my balance is so much better, my vertigo is gone! I would suggest to anyone if they are having issues with vertigo and balance to come here. They will be very pleased with results!” - Donna M.

“I am stronger!” “As my therapy has come to an end, I look back to my 1st initial assessment. I was unsteady, falling, 100% reliant on a walker to stay balanced. The wonderful staff pinpointed the core areas I needed to strengthen to obtain control over my balance and walking. The specialized balance machine was very helpful in determining what I can work on to help control standing and walking balance issues. Today I leave therapy a lot stronger, confident, and no longer fearful of falling. I’m also only using a cane and happy to say I’ve not fallen once. Thank you for everything.” - E. S.

Hello Friends, On February 26th, I was invited to speak at St. Joan of Arc in Merrillville…last March 20th at the Porter County RN Club… and last April 30th at the Immanuel Lutheran Elder Joy group. I spoke about Balance and Dizziness...particularly how to conquer dizziness issues and prevent falling. Balance and dizziness issues hit home for me as I myself suffer from occasional dizziness...and so does my mom. Hers is particularly bad when it hits her, and I get concerned about her falling. She lives in a two-story home, and the thought of her negotiating those stairs every day makes me worried. What’s even more alarming is the frequency of falling in older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control: • 27% of adults age 65-74 years old fall • 30% for those who are 75-84 years old • 37% for those over 85 years old What one of the attendees at St. Joan of Arc told me was particularly eye-opening: “Arlan-it’s not the broken hip, it’s the nursing home I don’t want. I want to remain independent.” I’d like to do my share to help...but I need your assistance. I’m trying to reach out to as many clubs, organizations, and church groups as possible to spread the word about fall prevention, conquering dizziness, and remaining independent. Do you belong to a church group, club, or an organization whose members would benefit from a presentation about Fall Prevention, Balance and Dizziness? If you do, I would love to speak with you. Please email me directly at ArlanAlburo@OrthopedicAndBalanceTherapy.com, or you can reach me directly on my cell phone at 219-577-3533. Sincerely, This issue hits home for me and my mom…and you?

Find out if you’re at risk of falling in this simple 30-Seconds Self-Test Today you’ll discover a simple test, so you can determine whether your balance is in top shape or if you need to take action to improve it. In addition, you’ll also get an easy yet effective exercise that you can practice anytime anywhere to enhance your balance. Single Leg Standing Balance Test You may want to have someone nearby to watch you as you try this. Stand on a hard floor near a table or countertop for support. Bend one knee and lift the foot – if you’re left-handed, stand on your left leg and lift the right foot; do the opposite if you’re right-handed. You don’t need to lift it high, just enough to keep it off the floor. Now without holding onto anything slowly count the number of seconds you can hold that position without putting your foot back down. Repeat the test 3 times, and then add up your total time and divide it by 3 to find your average balance time. (For example, if test 1 was 4 seconds, test 2 was 8 seconds, and test 3 was 6 seconds, you’d add up 4, 8, and 6 to get 18. Divide by 3, and your average balance time is 6 seconds.)
