Getting to Know the Zionsville PT Staff ZPT EMINA ALICUSIC-KARIC, PT, DPT The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body September 2018

Emina joined our staff this summer, having just graduated from Gannon University with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy this past May. Prior to this she earned her Bachelor in Sport and Exercise Science from Gannon University. ZPT was her final clinical rotation, where she “fine tuned” her clinical skills under Katie Poisel’s supervision. Q: What made you first interested in becoming a physical therapist? A: I grew up in Bosna and Herzegovina during the war. At that time, I realized I wanted to help people. Later on, my father passed away from cancer and this solidified my choice in working in the health care field. I chose therapy because I wanted to help people in a positive way and have time to make a real connection with each patient. Q: Where did you grow up? A: I was born and raised in Bosnia and Herzegovina until I was eight years old, then my family moved to Erie, PA, after the war. I lived there until I moved to Brownsburg, IN, in December, 2017. Q: What do you like most about working at ZPT? A: The amazing family feel and environment. I know each patient gets personalized care because we truly care about each person as a whole. Q: Favorite food?

and we continue to expand our family. I recently got married (December 2017) and added some more amazing family members into the group. Q: Something most people do not know about you? A: I finished high school in 3 years and was the Salutatorian. Q: Hobbies or special interests? A: I love to hang out with my family and friends, watch too much Netflix (just kidding, there is never too much Netflix), and sing the wrong lyrics to each and every song that gets played on the radio! Welcome, Emina, to the ZPT team! Your joyful enthusiasm for caring and treating our patients is contagious. We are eager to introduce you to our community!

A: Bread!! Q: Family?

A: As mentioned before, my father passed away, but I still have my mother, 2 sisters and a brother. We are grateful each day that we have each other

September 2018

Dear ZPT family and friends,

INSIDE:

My husband, Kent, and I recently took a trip north to the lovely town of Ludington, Michigan, in my dependable 2009 Subaru Forester. Before the trip Kent aired up my tires and reported that I have a slow leak in one of them. Not surprisingly, I had also tested the tread and found that the tires are ready to be replaced very soon. The ramifications of not paying attention to these maintenance details could be tragic! Likewise, when we ignore our body’s signals that things aren’t quite right, that we are leaking (oops!) or that we are getting worn out in places and weak in others, the results could be worst than if we would simply find out what is happening and handle the situation. Why not get the answers and the help you need, by getting a “tune up” with your local experts in human “body work”: ZPT! September 22 is National Fall Prevention Awareness Day! So we are sharing tips on how to test yourself and how to protect you or a loved one from tripping and falling. Balance and reaction time are part of the equation, as well as the safety of your home environment. We have put together a little packet of information available at ZPT for you to pick up and take home with check lists and things to do this month that could make a big difference in your family’s safety. See inside for more details. At the end of September, my classmates from ZCHS, the class of 1978, are meeting for our 40-year reunion. I know… do the math. As members of the reunion committee, we have been planning for over a year, to reach everyone and to plan our dinner and party. One of the tasks for each of the classmates was to complete a questionnaire, which gave us an opportunity to reflect on what we had done over the past 40 years. Wow. Funny how most of what I wrote about was my family. Then, I actually wrote about ZPT, what we do, why we do it, and how it has blessed my staff and me to provide education and excellent rehabilitation to the community where I grew up! I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life right now. I hope and pray that we continue to grow as a business, to help as many as we can in our conservative methods of pain relief and strengthening, all with a personal caring touch. STAND UP for better balance and no falling! Not-so-fun-facts about Falling: According to theCenters forDiseaseControl andPrevention, each year, millions of older people– those65 and older – fall. In fact, more than one out of four older persons fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor! Falling once doubles your chances of falling again! One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury. Each year, 2.8 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. Over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture. Each year at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways. Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Adjusted for inflation, the direct medical costs for fall injuries are $31 billion annually. Hospital costs account for two-thirds of the total. Many conditions contribute to falling. These are called risk factors, many of which can be changed or modified to help prevent falls. They include: • Lower body weakness • Vitamin D deficiency • Difficulties with walking and balance • Use of medications such as tranquilizers, sedatives or antidepressants

NATURAL WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN

Do you find your knees or hips hurting after sitting for too long? Has bending or squatting, become difficult or even painful? This is a common complaint of people with knee or hip osteoarthritis. Did you know that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that 1 out of every 2 people will have symptoms of knee osteoarthritis sometime before the age of 85? The incidence of osteoarthritis generally starts to increase after age 35 and decreases one’s ability to perform walking, bending and every day tasks. Osteoarthritis can occur for a variety of reasons: • Normal or abnormal wear and tear on joint cartilage • Injuries that damage cartilage and joints • Diseases that damage cartilage • Lack of joint support from poor muscle strength and tissue flexibility What is Osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis describes the condition of abnormal wear and tear of cartilage from a joint surface causing bone on bone rubbing. This can be quite painful and occurs more in the knees, hips and ankles. This is due to the fact that these joints bear the weight of your body and have to endure an average of 3,000-6000 steps a day. That is over one million steps / bending and movements a year! Knee osteoarthritis pain is generally felt under the knee cap, but can travel up the thighordownyour lower leg.Thepadsbelowyourkneegenerallybecome thicker and more swollen. At times, your knee may even become slightly swollen or even red. Hip osteoarthritis pain is generally felt in the groin on one side or deep in the buttock. Pain may actually subside with walking, but become worse after prolonged or short time sitting then trying to get up and move again. Whatcanbedone? Mostpain iscausedbypoor jointmovementandweakness in the muscles around the joint. This causes instability to the joint and greater pressure on the cartilage causing more inflammation and pain. Physical therapy is the preferred method of treatment, because it discovers the abnormal movement in the joint and naturallycorrects it. Withhands-on therapy, specialstrengthening, stretching, and balanceexercises, kneeorhippaincanbe relieved, andbalancegreatly improved! HANDS-ONTHERAPY: Your physical therapist at ZPTcan mobilize your hips, lower spine, yourkneecaporknee jointandankle toenable the joints tomovemorenormally

and freely. The alignment of your body and its mobility are key to walking correctly and minimizing painful habits. Soft tissue massage may help with stretching and lengthening tight muscles that contribute to joint compression and pain. EXERCISE: “Motion is lotion” is the phrase we like to use to encourage movement in our arthritic patients. Not only strengthening specific muscle groups that become weakened with arthritic changes, but also of importance is simply moving and stretching through full motion – restoring flexibility and improving blood flow. Cartilage receives its nutrition from the movement and pressure of joint fluid, so the more you can exercise with movement, the better. A combination of weight bearing and non-weight bearing exercises are helpful, such as walking plus water aerobics or biking. We highly recommend seeking the help of our experts here at ZPT to set up an individual program that suits your particular needs. SUPPLEMENTS and NUTRITION: Avoid inflammatory foods such as high fat, fried foods, sodas, high sugar content and processed foods. Instead eat whole foods, whole grains, nuts and seeds, plenty of brightly colored vegetables and fruits, and healthy fats from avocado, olive and coconut. According to the Arthritis Foundation, therearestudies thatshowsomebenefit tousingglucosamineandchondroitin, which supports the cartilage. Find out if you are deficient in calcium or magnesium, which are minerals needed for muscles, bones and nerves. Supplements must be easily digested and absorbed to be helpful in our bodies. Investigate your sources and ask your healthcare provider for suggestions on brands if you require supplements. SLEEP: Sleep is a time for our body and brain to repair itself. It is important to get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep to allow for repair and to avoid additional inflammation and weight gain. Ask your physical therapist to suggest various sleep positions to support your joints and allow rest without strain.
