The judges were impressed by this project due to the complexity of the site working environment and the quality of the completed building. The collaboration between client, architect and contractor was evident. The new entrance lobby is a high-quality, impressive addition to the hospital, with great care taken to provide a welcoming and relaxed informal environment that resembles a hospitality venue. The business end of the hospital was exceptional, with the contractor dealing with a complex live working environment during the entire progress of the works. Judging this category posed a challenge, mainly due to the exceptional quality of entries and the wide range of projects amongst the finalists. Ultimately, One Elmwood demonstrated a high degree of quality across a complex project with a client that demanded high standards. The end result is a building that is a landmark in Belfast, hosting many valuable amenities and services. One Elmwood, housing Queen’s University’s new student centre and student union building, extends across 11,000m². It features a striking red steelwork, full-height atrium completed with a bleacher-style staircase, visible to the surrounding campus through a full-height glass curtain wall.
