NEWS

Close to half of tradespeople responding to a new survey have admitted they do not always take required precautions when working. And almost a fifth said they had been injured as a direct result of breaking health and safety rules on site, found the study by Direct Line business insurance. Furthermore, 45% of respondents said that they were not fully aware of not regularly updating themselves on relevant H&S rules, and 39% acknowledged there is not always an emphasis on ensuring junior colleagues or trainees know how to follow H&S rules. Only 60% said they would step in and question a colleague if they were not following a serious rule. Alison Traboulsi, Product Manager at Direct Line, said, “An employer has a duty of care for its employees. In addition, if training that is designed to keep those employees safe is not up to scratch, it could leave businesses open to Employers’ Liability claims.” A FIFTH OF TRADESPEOPLE INJURED WHEN BREAKING H&S RULES

Portadown firm Piperhill Construction is leading a major refurbishment project already underway at Belfast International Airport. The £100m five-year investment programme is set to include a new security terminal and improved departure and border force areas, creating around 400 local construction jobs. A temporary passenger exit has been created to allow additional works to be undertaken within the arrivals hall, with all works to be completed by summer 2024. The new £25m terminal will implement Standard 3 Xray screening equipment, removing the need for passengers to remove liquids or electronics from their luggage. Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions & President of VINCI Airports, said, “The airport plays a pivotal role for aviation, tourism and the wider local economy. As a long- term partner, VINCI Airports is committed to sustainably develop the airport and increase its environmental performance.” A new 26MWp solar farm will be created on site by VINCI Concessions’ photovoltaic subsidiary SunMind to generate 22.4 GWh of electricity and save 12,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Keylite Roof Windows (Keylite) has lifted Best Use of Social Media in Service/B2B at the 2023 Northern Ireland Social Media Awards held in Belfast in October. The accolade recognised Kick it with Keylite, its 2022 initiative supporting mental health awareness in partnership with Mates in Mind, a charity supporting the development of positive mental wellbeing within construction. The Irish-owned roof window manufacturer embarked on the campaign in response to reports that men in Northern Ireland are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, with the trend tripling again for men working in construction. Keylite’s campaign challenged the construction industry to ‘keep it up’, encouraging merchants, trades and all those in the sector to record themselves doing as many keepie uppies as they can, share on social media, donate to the charity and nominate a ‘mate in mind’ to get involved using the hashtag #KeepItUp. More than 50 pop-up events were held at builders’ merchants across the UK and Ireland. KEYLITE MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE TRIUMPHS AT NI SOCIAL MEDIA AWARDS

NI BUILDER SPOKE TO PAUL MCSORLEY ABOUT HIS NEW AREA SALES MANAGER ROLE AT SIMPSON STRONG-TIE TO CEMENT THE COMPANY’S PRESENCE IN THE IRISH MARKET… Simpson Strong-Tie bolsters support with new appointment

S impson Strong-Tie, world-

leading specialist in connectors and structural systems for the

construction industry, has announced the appointment of a new Area Sales Manager, to cement its position as a leading supplier to the Irish market. Paul McSorley has been tasked to grow Simpson’s Irish customer base, identifying specific industry sectors with which to build long-term relationships. NIB – How did your career get started? Paul McSorley - I started working for my family’s construction business when I was about 10. I started my sales career at Coca- Cola as a merchandiser and worked my way up to area manager. Then, I moved to the pharmaceutical sector, where I spent the next 25 years. NIB - What have been the main takeaways from your experience so far? PM - I learnt the best lessons in my career, at Coca-Cola, where we were taught the science behind the selling process. It’s all about how the customer is positioned and the lengths we must go to, to provide them with an outstanding level of customer service, support, and professionalism. I have always been a believer in building long-term commercial relationships with customers, and this is my guiding principle.

Paul McSorley, Area Sales Manager.

in nine guiding principles: relentless customer focus, long-range vision, high-quality products, being the leader, everybody matters, enabling growth, risk-taking innovation, giving back, having fun and being humble. These company values guide the decisions taken by every employee, every day. NIB - What do you like to do in your free time? PM - Having three teenage children keeps my wife and me on our toes to work out logistical challenges around the kids and their hobbies. In my spare time, I follow most sports and play golf. “I have always been a believer in building long-term commercial relationships with customers, and this is my guiding principle.”

NIB - What are the plans for your new role? PM – I am going to keep building strong partnerships with customers both old and new across Ireland, both North and South. On a longer-term strategy, I am hoping to grow our builders’ merchants and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) business across the country by positioning best- in-class products alongside superior technical support and customer service. NIB - It is still early days, but do you foresee any challenges? PM - The construction industry in Ireland has undergoing multiple challenges over the past few years, from COVID 19 to Brexit. Thankfully now there is a lot more positivity, but we still are experiencing shortage in labour, increased prices for materials and product shortages. NIB - What does the new role mean to your career? PM - It is a privilege to work for Simpson Strong-Tie. The founder Barclay Simpson believed

SAINT-GOBAIN ECOPHON PRIDES ITSELF ON ACHIEVING HIGH DESIGN AND ACOUSTIC STANDARDS IN EVERY SPACE… Acoustics matter – everywhere

H aving acquired Fade™ Acoustic Plaster back in 2021, Saint-Gobain Ecophon is proud to be bringing this revolutionary product to the market and introducing it to spaces that ordinarily may not have been able to achieve a superior acoustic environment with the traditional wall-to-wall systems. Our real-world case studies below include St Saviour’s, in which Fade™ Acoustic Plaster has transformed challenging spaces into acoustic havens: ST SAVIOUR’S CHURCH, DOLLINGSTOWN Built in 2005, St Saviour’s Church in Dollingstown, Lurgan, was in need of modification and renovation. Nicola Waddington ARB RIBA, from

Waddington McClure Architects, explained the brief and how it was

achieved, using Ecophon Fade™ Acoustic Plaster Albus, along with other solutions to improve the lighting and acoustics. “One of the main issues was that the existing suspended ceiling – a grid system – had become uneven and discoloured with water damage. The recessed ceiling lights were inefficient, inflexible and difficult to access. They also caused significant glare as they were angled towards the congregation within the slope of the ceiling. Once it was determined that the existing ceiling was at the end of its expected life span, we saw the opportunity to create something beautiful in its place. The new ceiling needed to have a high acoustic quality and be able

to incorporate a flexible lighting system. Importantly, it had to harmonise with the existing contemporary interior and raise

the front of the church, providing additional sound absorption. “The result is an upgraded church building with a contemporary ceiling that avoids visual clutter and distraction whilst enhancing the existing interior. But most importantly, acoustics and quality of sound have improved worship within the space.” ANTRIM FORUM Saint-Gobain Ecophon was first introduced to Antrim Forum back in 2005, when the room was refurbished and treated with an acoustic system to allow the space to be a comfortable environment for all to use. Fast forward to 2023, Ecophon was delighted to be asked back to work on the space as part of a major refurbishment, with £2.4m invested by the local council at the new state-of-the-art Fitness Suite at Antrim Forum. Working alongside Michael Herron Architects, as well as contractors and installers to maintain the tradition of having not only great-looking ceilings in the state- of-the-art gym, but also achieving optimal

acoustics in the space. Installing Ecophon Focus™ Lp, Ecophon Solo™ Baffles and Ecophon Solo™ Hexagon in the main gym areas, complements the latest innovative sports equipment, achieving a high spec finish all round. Ecophon Hygiene Performance™ A was also installed in washrooms, toilets and changing rooms, bringing the space up to date, while making it an enjoyable space for all to be in. Ecophon develops, manufactures and markets acoustic panels, baffles and ceiling systems that contribute to a good working environment by enhancing people’s wellbeing and performance. It is part of the Saint-Gobain Group, a world leader in sustainable habitat solutions, and all Ecophon ceiling tiles are fully recyclable. Ecophon has business units in 20 countries, delegations in another 30 countries worldwide and approximately

the quality of the worship space. “Ecophon Fade™ Acoustic Plaster

Albus system was selected for the new ceiling, giving a smooth contemporary appearance in keeping with the design of the existing church. The product has been used to create a dramatic design of ‘floating’ panels stepping down towards the front of the church. This meant that low energy lighting could be seamlessly incorporated in tracks along each step in the ceiling, concealing the fittings removing glare and distraction. Bluetooth control means a variety of lighting scenes can be used at different times of day or create different moods within the space. Evening services that have a small congregation can now be lit to create a special intimacy in the large worship space. “Ecophon Akusto™ wall panels in the colour shade ‘Garlic’ were also selected to encase the new audio-visual screens at

800 employees. The head office is located in Hyllinge, just outside Helsingborg, Sweden.

LIMAVADY SHARED EDUCATION CAMPUS

DELIVERING NORTHERN IRELAND’S FIRST SHARED EDUCATION CAMPUS A SURPRISE VISIT BY HILLARY CLINTON, AND 1,400 STUDENTS ON SITE, CREATED NEW CHALLENGES FOR CONTRACTOR WOODVALE CONSTRUCTION…

N orthern Ireland’s first shared education campus opened its doors in September, following completion of a complex £7.8m project by main contractor Woodvale Construction Company. Upgrading finishes and M&E in the existing buildings of Limavady and St Mary’s high schools, the new Limavady Shared Education Campus (LSEC) also added extensions totalling 5,400sqft across the two neighbouring sites. The project was delivered under a NEC 3 Engineering and Construction Contract, Option B with priced bill of quantities (BOQ). The pioneer project in the Department

for Education’s Shared Education Campuses Programme launched in 2014, LSEC was awarded Fresh Start Programme funding in 2016. Ground was broken in April 2021, with classes and activities for 1,400 students ongoing amid the construction project. Further complicating the timeline and logistics was a mid-project visit by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as part of the 25th anniversary Good Friday Agreement celebrations. Woodvale rose to the challenge, with an innovative, multiphase build managed by Contracts Manager Emmett Teggart. “This was a complex scheme delivered over six phases, working in close

proximity to staff and pupils,” said Emmett. Our site management team and staff excelled in delivering the works on time, to budget and to the highest quality, all whilst understanding the day-to-day pressures faced by the principals across both schools. “We kept in close contact with the principals on a weekly basis, ensuring they were updated on programme and if there were any works that may potentially affect their management activities. “Credit is also due to our long-standing supply chain for their work throughout the project, but none more so than in their efforts to prepare for the unexpected visit

“Woodvale went above and beyond during construction.”

from Hillary Clinton.” Woodvale’s work programme was adapted to prepare for the ceremony. Numerous meetings were held with the Secret Service to facilitate the visit by an “important visitor”. Hard landscaped areas were prepared for the unveiling of the ceremonial benches. The inspection unearthed a forgotten time capsule in the roof eaves, which had to be x-rayed and returned to its hiding place to be opened in 2030. Hamilton Architects designed the campus, with a new, shared entrance area and facilities. The six phases were split between the two campuses and included a new learning support centre; shared sixth form careers, drama, media campus; technology room refurbishments; STEM centre, science and technology classroom refurbishment; and new admin offices and a boardroom. Segregated construction works prioritised health and safety, with Woodvale achieving its target of zero accidents on site.

The site team was managed by Wesley Lindsay and Alan Heaney, who both worked closely with the school principals to minimise pupil disruption at all times. Managing the project budget created further complexity, with Woodvale Quantity Surveyor Pauric Kelly essentially running two projects with separate BOQs for the clients representing each school, the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools and Controlled Schools’ Support Council. Winner of the CEF Social Value Project of the Year 2022, Woodvale reinforced its commitment to supporting local communities during the LSEC project, donating coats, hats, gloves and scarfs to the Limavady Social Supermarket. And its efforts to maintain community relations during works in a busy town centre were recognised with an Excellent Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) score of 43 for the project. Rita Moore of St Mary’s Limavady and Darren Mornin of Limavady High School said,

“Woodvale Construction is a company who understand how schools work. They made every effort to ensure teaching and learning was uninterrupted and even found ways to manage school buses arriving on site.”

The major challenge of this project was the validation and extension of the M+E systems within the existing two sites to facilitate the proposed works. The main M&E primary services were upgraded and extended accordingly, resulting in the

construction of new M&E plantrooms. Construction works were carried out within a live education campus environment and were phased to best achieve uninterrupted operation of the existing colleges. Commenting, Allister Bloomer Project Associate at TB+A, said: “This was the first Shared Education Campus of its type in Northern Ireland. We are immensely proud to have been part of the team to successfully deliver this wonderful project. The facilities will make a huge difference to the staff and pupils at Limavady High School and St. Mary’s Limavady, enhancing their educational experiences into the future.” Damien McMullan, Associate at TB+A, added, “Having worked with Woodvale and their supply chain successfully on several other high-profile education

PAINT SPECIFICATION, ON-SITE SUPPORT AND TECHNICAL BACKUP

W hen SDE Decorators was appointed as the painting contractor for the £11m Limavady Shared Education Campus, the business understood the importance of correctly specifying paint for this project. The end result had to withstand the daily activities of busy campus life – especially as two schools would be using the new

facilities. With this in mind, SDE Decorators turned to the Dulux Decorator Centre specification team for support. The team was able to advise and supply SDE Decorators with all the products needed for the project, as well as provide the contractor with additional advice and support as and when it was needed. In fact, Dulux Decorator Centre can assist with paint specification, from tester pots for site to colour support, as well as being able to provide on-site support and technical

backup. Futhermore, for environmentally conscious contractors, Dulux Decorator Centre can also recycle any empty paint cans for free, to divert them away from landfill.

Stephen Dawson, Director for Whitehouse Engineering said, “This was another project for us within the education sector, which demonstrates our commitment to delivering high efficiency ventilation services or our clients.” Whitehouse Engineering has been operating for over 50 years and has extensive experience working on contracts in the health and education sectors, carrying out projects across Northern Ireland, RoI and GB. It has also enjoyed continued success in the retail, industrial, commercial and leisure sectors. CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYERS FEDERATION CHIEF EXECUTIVE, MARK SPENCE, INTRODUCES THE 2023 CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE AWARDS… Construction Excellence Awards 2023

T he 24th CEF Excellence Awards marked a historic year with 26 winners and 600 attendees at Belfast’s Crowne Plaza. This event united industry professionals and clients from across our public, private and third sectors to celebrate accomplishments, highlighting the power of partnerships. The keynote address from Dr Jayne Brady, Head of the NI Civil Service, reinforced that theme of partnership and of the value of the construction sector in delivering crucial works across our public estate. Gratitude goes to our 14 sponsors and 5 CEF Patrons for their continuous support. Local broadcaster Sarah Travers and renowned architect George Clarke expertly hosted the event, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for all. Our esteemed judges faced a daunting task: evaluating numerous high-quality

entries and selecting award winners. After extensive deliberation, three contractors secured victory in our housing categories. These winners are DB Building Contracts for Moira Gate in Moira, Kelly Brothers for Moylinney in Newtownabbey, and Farrans Construction for Aster House in Belfast. Our GB & RoI category was expanded to four categories this year on the back of the continued growth of local contractors in both markets. Across the four there were victories for McKelvey Construction for Grange Primary Care Centre, Sligo; GRAHAM for both the University of York Student Accommodation and Marsh Barton Railway Station, Exeter and Farrans Construction for Signature at Hendon Hall, London. The highly competitive Quality Performance Awards saw triumphs for Woodvale Construction in Sustainability, Farrans Construction in Training, and

Breedon Group in Health and Safety. GRAHAM then picked up a further two Awards with success in the new Use of Construction Software Award as well as the Social Value Project of the Year for the Grand Central Station Busway Bridge & Ramps Project. Our General Construction category saw a range of projects receive the recognition that they rightly deserve. Within this, Felix O’Hare won two Awards – Commercial and Education – for One Elmwood, Queen’s University, Belfast while the Health Project of the Year this year went to Cleary Contracting for Kingsbridge Hospital Block B – Theatre 4 and Wards 4&5, Belfast. There was also a double win for Babcock Rail who took home both the Infrastructure Project of the Year and the much-coveted Achieving Excellence in Partnering Award for the Lagan Junction to Yorkgate Track renewal project, Belfast. Our Construction Person Awards celebrated both seasoned professionals dedicated to excellence throughout their careers and rising stars. Three exceptional individuals were honoured. Firstly, this year’s Apprentice of the Year was David Reid at Charles Brand. Secondly, the Outstanding Contributor Award went to Maria Bradley, HR Director of Gilbert-Ash. Finally, our Lifetime Achievement Award went to the Founder and Chairman of Henry Brothers, Jim Henry CBE. Our Overall Award for the most outstanding project of the year went to the firm and project which also won our Restoration Award – Heron Brothers for Templemore Baths in Belfast. The restoration of the Baths, opened in 1893, impressed our judges. Meticulous repairs and a modern extension will give the community a cherished building for years to come. Congratulations again to all the winners and we look forward to launching our 25th Anniversary Awards in spring 2024.

But more needs to be done to encourage young people and females to join the sector. “We must keep working hard to ensure that the doors into construction are as open and inviting as possible for our women and girls,” she concluded.
