The sub-£2.5 million category for GB/ROI proved to be highly competitive, showcasing a diverse range of projects. The judging panel held all the finalists in high regard, recognising the exceptional calibre of the participants. The ultimate winner, McKelvey Construction, stood out by articulating its approach to realising the project’s vision. The firm’s success stemmed from the application of innovative construction methods and the establishment of a strong, collaborative dynamic among the client, designer and sub-contractors. This enduring project has not only bestowed a meaningful legacy upon the local community but has also garnered significant praise from a broad spectrum of stakeholders. Apprentice of the Year Award
WINNER: DAVID REID, CHARLES BRAND
David Reid joined Charles Brand through the Work+ Apprenticeship scheme. He said: “Charles Brand has been great, and colleagues are so supportive. When people realise I’m an apprentice, they give me a lot of leeway, support and encouragement. They don’t expect me to know everything, and I have a real sense that they are really bought into helping me develop professionally. The company puts me on projects where I can gain the most experience.” In the space of three years, David has already shown an extensive array of experience across a range of challenging projects, including the award-winning Magheracross Viewpoint in Portrush and the Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme, which will provide a long-term approach to tidal flood risk management for Belfast. David’s commitment to his professional development is illustrated by his interest in the Institution of Civil Engineers, his long-term goal of achieving chartered status and his short-term goal of achieving EngTech. David’s skills as a drone pilot were instrumental in the Belfast Tidal project in capturing and recording outfalls into the River Lagan at low water, eliminating the need to use a boat and providing a safer, more effective and less expensive solution. Judges were impressed by his “ability to problem solve and communicate with stakeholders and other departments”, charitable work and “clear longer-term goals”.
