Achieving Excellence in Partnering Award
Several projects were considered for the collaboration award, which recognises the benefits created by teams working together to achieve sustainable outcomes. The work of Babcock’s rail business work stood out to the judges as it was delivered in one of the busiest locations in NI whilst being almost unnoticed by the passing public. The panel attributed the almost stealthy quality of the project to meticulous planning. The judges praised the choreographed collaboration among sub-contractors, statutory authorities, the public, landowners, business owners and Translink to overcome the difficulties of access, which required the closure of a motorway slip road on Christmas Day and the installation of craning points across the city. WINNER: BABCOCK, LAGAN JUNCTION TO YORKGATE TRACK RENEWAL PROJECT, BELFAST
Maria’s 36-year career with Gilbert-Ash has showcased her vast and impressive breadth of experience, working from PA level to growing into the firm’s leader across HR, CSR and a range of other areas within the company. Today, Maria is Gilbert-Ash’s Human Resources Director, and the judges applauded her leadership in construction – helping to modernise, develop and nurture the next generation. She has been able to use her knowledge and experience to help the company grow in a positive direction, with projects in over 44 countries across the globe. Her dedication, passion and commitment to fostering an inclusive environment has not only inspired the company but has also paved the way for more opportunities for women in construction and engineering. Maria has a strong focus on diversity and particularly on bringing more women into what is seen as a male-dominated industry. She believes it is essential for businesses to foster innovation, creativity and empathy in the workplace, and is proud to have overseen the increase of females in the Gilbert-Ash workforce to 22%, rising above the industry average of 11%. She has recently taken up a Board position with Women’stec, NI’s largest provider of training for women in non-traditional skills. Maria has also been the driver behind Gilbert-Ash’s sponsorship of Women’stec #notjustforboys.
