Overall Winner WINNER: HERON BROS., TEMPLEMORE BATHS, BELFAST
T he Overall Winner award presented a significant challenge for our panel of judges this year. Several projects displayed unique attributes that warranted careful consideration. After thorough deliberation and in light of the recent climate act, which emphasises the importance of sustainability in our daily lives, the winning project was selected for its remarkable ability to blend a diverse set of skills. This project not only revived a building with a rich history, but also made a positive impact on the local community both during its operational years and after its restoration. The winning project in this category left a lasting impression on the judging panel. It represented a meticulous undertaking that combined restoration with a modern extension. Heron Bros.’ unwavering attention to detail and commitment to preserving the building’s heritage were nothing short of incredible.
Recognising a shortage of skilled conservation tradespeople, the contractor took the proactive step of organising training courses conducted by its own expert staff. These courses aimed to equip existing joiners, tilers and bricklayers with the specialised skills and techniques required for conservation projects. This commitment to nurturing expertise demonstrated Heron Bros.’ dedication to the craft. During the project’s execution, significant structural challenges in the existing building came to light. However, the integration of skilled conservation craftsmanship with cutting-edge digital tools and software, including 3D scans and real-time reporting, enabled swift decision making. This, in turn, ensured the project’s timely completion and adherence to the allocated budget. The completed project has not only preserved a cherished local landmark but
has also empowered the community to take ownership of its heritage. It stands as a testament to the values of fiscal responsibility, adherence to project timelines and the integration of positive social values through extensive community consultations. In recognition of its intricate blend of complexity, historical significance, commitment to sustainability and meaningful community engagement, the Templemore Baths refurbishment has rightfully earned Heron Bros. the prestigious title of Overall Winner 2023. This project serves as a shining example of the enduring value of our architectural heritage and its ability to bridge the past with a more sustainable future.
