Newlyweds and New Dentists Who Are the New Faces at Huron?

This month, I am very excited to introduce Dr. Esteban Morales and Dr. Kassandra Gorena. These newlyweds are also new to Huron and, like myself, they’ve moved from Texas to join Huron Smiles. I’ve worked with them at one of my other practices in Texas and I’m thrilled to have them as part of our team up here in Huron.

I’ll let Dr. Morales take it from here.

love the town. Huron is bustling with life and I’m excited to meet all 12,000 residents. Everyone I have met has been so nice and friendly!

Hello, everyone!

My name is Dr. Esteban Morales, and I am thrilled to be here. What a crazy month! Dr. Kassandra Gorena and I were married a few weeks ago — in the middle of packing and moving from Texas to South Dakota — and our first day at the office was April 1. It’s been a whirlwind but we are so grateful for the opportunity to serve the community of Huron. Dr. Gorena and I have worked with Dr. Drake in Texas for a number of years, and we love the way she runs her practice. Her values and work revolve completely around her patients, which is something Dr. Gorena and I both relate with. I got into dentistry because I liked the idea of being able to help people get out of pain quickly. Dentists get to do a little bit of everything; it’s both a medical field and an art. When patients come in, I like being able to give them what they need and fix their problems, so they leave the office feeling better than when they came. It’s very rewarding and part of the reason I love what I do. Like all newlyweds, we planned for our lives after marriage and continuing to work with Dr. Drake fit right into our plan. Although our families were sad to see us go, Dr. Gorena and I were excited to make the move. We really like the office and the staff, and we absolutely

I also really liked the idea of living someplace where my backyard is basically in the great outdoors. I’m a bit of a hunter, and I’m looking forward to getting out there and seeing what challenges South Dakota has to offer. Fishing is also at the top of my life. Up until now, most of my fishing has been done on the coast. It’s going to be great to see how freshwater fishing in rivers differs from saltwater fishing. Huron offers a nice balance between having space to stretch your arms and being part of a full town. We will definitely be taking advantage of that. Though it’s only been a few weeks, I can already tell we made the right move coming to Huron. On behalf of Dr. Gorena and myself, thank you to everyone we’ve met already for being so warm and welcoming. We look forward to meeting everyone and making Huron our home.

WORLDS WITHIN PAGES Books to Engage the Whole Family

For the Middle

Learning to read opens up a world of possibilities. When your child walks through the back of the wardrobe into Narnia with Lucy Pevensie or rides with Harry Potter on the train to Hogwarts, they connect to something beyond their own experiences. In the U.S., April 23 is World Book Day, and the date commemorates the deaths of legendary authors Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth of author Vladimir Nabokov. World Book Day is the perfect time to sit down with your family and let yourself be transported to new worlds. So, here are three great stories to help you take young readers on brand-new adventures. For the Elementary Reader: ‘Song of the Wild: A First Book of Animals’ “Song of the Wild” makes a great read-aloud book for beginner

Schooler: ‘The Night Diary’ 12-year-old Nisha navigates her world after the partition of India creates the new country of Pakistan and her family is forced to leave their home. Her mother may be gone, but Nisha

finds solace in writing nightly letters to her in her diary as she discovers what the future holds. Based on author Veera Hiranandani’s memories of her own family, this moving tale lets readers experience life through someone else’s eyes. For Teens: ‘Brazen: Rebel

Ladies Who Rocked the World’ While some might not think of comics as proper reading, Penelope Bagieu’s graphic novel forces reconsideration. Her clever, colorful artwork and engaging narrative take the reader through the biographies of 30 women, from Bette Davis and Mae Jemison to

readers because they can get lost in the beautiful artwork while you read the text. Written in prose and rhyming poems, this book showcases sprawling landscapes

— savannahs, jungles, and oceans — and features the wildlife living there. It’s worth a read simply to appreciate the colorful depictions of each animal. This book was written by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Petr Horácek.

lesser-known but equally intriguing ladies like Giorgina Reid. All in all, this book provides a great way to get kids excited about history in an entertaining form.

reach places, removing food, debris, plaque, and bacteria in pulsating bursts. Although these devices can be expensive, many people prefer the water flosser since it’s easier to use, especially if you have braces, dental implants, or nonremovable bridgework. Dental Floss

WHICH FLOSSING METHOD SHOULD YOU USE?

Water Flossers vs. Dental Floss If you’ve ever visited the dentist, it’s more than likely you’ve been asked how frequently you floss. Truthfully, many people choose not to floss — in fact, only about 4 in 10 Americans do. The act of flossing can be difficult for some people, but it’s one of the most important daily habits you can develop to sustain overall health. The Importance of Flossing Flossing is a vital part of maintaining oral health because it removes food, bacteria, and plaque that toothbrushes can’t reach. A person who brushes their teeth but doesn’t floss is more likely to suffer from poor oral health than someone who flosses once a day. And in the dental world, there are two popular methods of flossing: water flossers and dental floss. Water Flossers Water flossers shoot out a jet of water that flows between the teeth as its nozzle moves along the gum line. The pressurized water blasts your gums and the hard-to-

Floss has been around for about 200 years, but it didn’t become popular until after WWII. Dental floss functions similarly to a water flosser, except that instead of using a stream of water, you manually floss between your teeth and along your gums to remove debris, bacteria, and tartar. Many individuals prefer to use dental floss because it allows you to have more control when you floss. However, it can sometimes cause the gums to bleed, which is why many prefer water flossers. Dentists recommend that, whichever method you choose, you should floss at least once a day for optimal teeth and gum health. To get into the habit of flossing more regularly, try to floss before you brush your teeth. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, that’s the “ideal sequence for the most thorough removal of dental plaque.”

SHHHHHHH! It’s National Library Workers Day!

Whether you have a card or not, libraries are an important part of our community. They serve as meeting places, research stations, employment centers, and local historical archives. They help kids and adults alike explore vast literary worlds and immense databases of knowledge — all for free! Behind every library is a dedicated staff of librarians, catalogers, assistants, and administrators who keep the system running smoothly. While it may not be the most well-known holiday, April 9 is National Library Workers Day (NLWD). As part of National Library Week, NLWD recognizes and celebrates the vital work performed by library staff. Librarians and their team do far more than simply place books on the shelf and shush noisy teenagers, after all. Library science is a multidisciplinary field that takes years of study to master. Today’s librarians have the skills of managers, IT specialists, documentarians, archivists, and educators — equipping them to help anyone from elementary students to doctoral researchers. These professionals can be an invaluable resource for anyone looking to delve into a particular topic, even if they don’t know where to begin. Just tell your local library worker what

subject you’re interested in, and they can help you track down books, databases, magazine articles, and more.

How should you celebrate National Library Workers Day? Some groups,

such as the students at the University of Arizona, go above and beyond by delivering balloons and signs to library branches across Tucson. More commonly, however, library branches ask their community members to vote for a “star” staffer. If a library worker has made a difference in your life, you can submit their name to the American Library Association by visiting Ala-Apa.org and clicking “Submit A Star!” Lastly, you can show your appreciation by visiting your local library and thanking these professionals. These important community centers only work because they do!
