12 legions o f angels to defend Him, but He did not do it (Matt. 26:53). Very infrequently did His glory ap pear — as on the Mount o f Trans figuration. He clothed Himself in flesh and to a great degree limited Himself to our limitations. Prayer was not only petition, but commun ion with the Father as well. His prayer just before He raised Laza rus from the dead is very enlighten ing in this regard, for He said to His Father: “ Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because o f the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me” (John 11: 41-42). SINGING AND SAYING Q. I am intrigued with the fact that angels in the Scriptures seem just to speak the praises o f God, whereas the redeemed are said to sing. Do you know o f any exceptions to this? A. No. When Jesus was b om "sud denly there was with the angel a multitude o f the heavenly host prais ing God and saying, Glory to G od ...” (Matt. 2:13-14). The same is true o f the living creatures in Revelation 4 : 8 ; and angels in Revelation 5:12. PRESENT-DAY STYLES Q. What do you think o f present-day fashions? Are they not adding to the corruption o f the n a tio n s ? How should we dress in these times? A. This is what the law-enforcement agencies, federal, state and local, state. We should as Christians dress modestly, inconspicuously, and in a way that will please God and not attract attention to ourselves. Wom en, who are very clever about these things, can do this without being old-fashioned, queer or unattractive. The effeminacy o f men’s attire can not but trouble any real manly man; it certainly denotes a weakening of the race.
onomy 33:25: “ A s thy days, so shall thy strength be.” I know that it was a promise to one o f the sons o f Jacob or tribes o f Israel, but can we not apply it to ourselves and our lives? A. Certainly we may. I have done it hundreds o f times in my life and found it to be true. Everything in God’s Word is for us but not all of it is about us; it was all written for our example and our admonition (I Cor. 10 :11). We all have our own particular weaknesses but here is the contrast with God’s strength and ability. R e a d Philippians 4 :13 ; Psalms 121:1 and 124:8; Hebrews 4:12. ORIGIN OF THE RAINBOW Q. Does Genesis 9:13 give us the origin o f the rainbow? A. Yes. Until the flood it had not rained upon the earth which up to that time had been watered by a mist (Gen. 2:5, 6 ). Perhaps those who had never seen storms would have been frightened by them. God pointed out the beautiful phenomena o f the sun’s rays passing through the rain and shining upon the clouds and reassured His creation that He would not send another flood to de stroy the earth. Q. Why did Jesus pray? He wax equal with God and needed nothing. A. He prayed because while He was indeed wholly God, He also was tru ly man through the incarnation. Of course, He might have used His di vine power to supply all His human needs but He limited Himself in order to accomplish H is atoning work and to be our example. We live in dependence upon the Father. He showed us perfectly how it was to be done. All these things He did for us, not for Himself. When He was arrested, He might have summoned THE PRAYERS OF THE LORD JESUS
RECKONING AND MAKE-BELIEVE
Q. I have been puzzled by the state ment in Romans 6:11 : “ Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Isn’t this kind o f a make-believe? A. The Lord does not deal in make- believe but in reality. To reckon is to take a certain thing into account, to look upon it as true. We are told here to reckon on something because God, who cannot lie, says it is so, even though we may not see the evi dence o f it in our actual experience. We are to reckon ourselves to have died indeed unto sin in the cross o f Christ, and to be living unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. We o f ourselves cannot die to sin. Christ already has done so, and we in Him. Paul says it plainly in Galatians 2 :20 : “ I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith o f [or in] the Son o f God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” IS CHRIST STILL MAN? Q. Is Jesus as truly man today as when He was here upon the earth? A. Yes, in the incarnation He did not assume a temporary condition. In Him deity and humanity were united forever. Of course, He is now in His resurrection body, an incor ruptible body, as described in I Cor inthians 15 and in His many appear ances a ft e r His resurrection. He looks as He did upon earth (save fo r His glory). He was recognized by Mary in the Garden and by the disciples who exclaimed: “ It is the L o rd !" OUR W EAKNESS- GOD'S STRENGTH Q.
