ORTHODONTIC BONDING A Closer Look

Anyone who has worked in the industry for over a decade can

and various orthodontic adhesives. Studying these incredibly small structures in such high fidelity allowed scientists to isolate and measure how a key variable affects the bond strength of an adhesive: the form of the adhesive surface itself. When viewed through such a powerful microscope, orthodontic adhesives look like the surface of alien worlds. The nanostructures of these compounds form hills and valleys, the magnitude of which depend on the unique compositions of the adhesive. Some bonding solutions have rolling hills and shallow troughs, whereas others are more akin to a microscopic version of the Rocky Mountains. The researchers refer to these features as the “adhesive roughness” — the higher the hills, or “thorns,” the rougher the adhesive is said to be. Through extensive trials, the roughness of an adhesive nanostructure proved to be positively related to bond strength. Simply put, the more thorns an adhesive has, the more easily it fits into the etched gaps between the carbonated hydroxyapatite crystals that make up tooth enamel. It’s not unlike the tiny hooks and loops that make Velcro lock together: the more hooks there are, the stronger the bond is. In the course of this study, many of the most popular brands of orthodontic adhesives were tested. The

appreciate that orthodontic bonding has come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days of foul-smelling methyl methacrylate cement and the constant need for rebonds. In the age of modern, cured adhesive systems, it’s never been easier to attach appliances cleanly and efficiently. “When viewed through such a powerful microscope, orthodontic adhesives look like the surface of alien worlds.” But not all systems are created equal. With the wrong adhesive, bracket floating and outright bond failure are still possibilities. Given the threat of dental caries and all the work that goes into establishing proper alignment, the last thing you or your patients want is for a bracket to slip. That’s why, when we set out to offer a precision bonding solution, we wanted it to be one of the most reliable options on the market. Now, thanks to a groundbreaking scientific study, we know we’ve succeeded. Research published in the scientific journal Contemporary Materials offers new insights into the bonding process at the nanoscopic level. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the researchers were able to observe the nanostructures of both tooth enamel

researchers found that our product, Resilience Orthodontic adhesive, produced the strongest bond. According to the study’s abstract, “Higher roughness of Resilience Orthodontic bonding solutions at the nano level is probably due to a bigger number of thorns which penetrate into micro cavities formed under the action of acids. Higher roughness is a consequence of the chemical structure itself.” In other words: the specific nature of Resilience’s composite resin produces bonds you and your patients can rely on. At Ortho Technology, we pride ourselves on helping doctors and patients find value in every smile. In practice, this means always staying on the cutting edge of the latest advances in orthodontic research by searching high and low for advancements that make clinic visits easier on everyone. As this nanoscopic research shows, even the smallest details can make a big difference for your patients.

PERSONAL NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ARE

Why Your Business Goals Won’t Work

At the end of the year, entrepreneurs sit down to develop their goals for the new year. They craft specific objectives based on best practices they learned from other leaders, implementing S.M.A.R.T. goals or strategic plans to give their company a clear path to success. But every year, perfectly crafted benchmarks fall by the wayside and join weight loss on the scrap heap of New Year’s resolutions. Owners scratch their heads wondering why they didn’t reach their target, not understanding the root cause of their failure. You can have the most carefully planned-out goals, but if you haven’t built a foundation on these three concepts, you’ll never achieve them.

Organization

employee, so without teaching basic principles of time management and prioritization, those systems are limited in their capacity and effectiveness.

Nothing derails a goal faster than ineffective systems and processes. Procedures aren’t dynamic, so as your business changes, an audit of processes isn’t just useful; it’s necessary. But as your business must continue to improve its organization in order to adapt to change, so do your team members. At the root of every system is an

company and gave away many free samples in conjunction with competitive pricing. I also briefly used Rocky Mountain “old ironside” orthodontic bands to prevent stretching by the less experienced orthodontic assistants. American Orthodontics became my exclusive brand for a few years because of competitive pricing as well as a personal friendship with the outside sales representative. Why did you decide to switch to Ortho Technology as your primary vendor? I found Ortho Technology to be a premier product second to none.

concept of “If you pay more, you will receive a superior product” definitely does not apply here. Ortho Technology products are second to none in quality and have favorable product pricing for brackets, bands, and peripherals. If you want to pay more for a highly marketed “designer” orthodontic product, that is your business. However, if you want to pay less for one of the highest quality orthodontic products available in the orthodontic industry, that is Ortho Technology’s business. What is your favorite product and why? Ortho Technology bands are state-of-the-art with respect to individual tooth adaptability as well as resistance to being “stretched” or deformed by less seasoned assistants. Also, my direct bond failure for mandibular second premolars is unbelievably low with Ortho Technology metal brackets.

customer Dr. Michael Rowe sat down with us to talk about his 37 years of experience in the industry and how this informs his choice of products. Here’s what Dr. Rowe had to say about bracket selection. What were some of the orthodontic brackets you used when you first started? After completing my orthodontic residency at the Medical College of Virginia, I was 100 percent Unitek, as it was my comfort zone. Next, I became an ORMCO “Elite” orthodontist due to the false impression that if you pay higher prices for products, you will obviously have less bracket failure, resulting in shorter treatment durations. GAC followed; at the time, they were a new international

between teammembers, management, and leaders. Complacency and gossip tend to spread like wildfire and can

cause a dip in productivity. External communication between partners and potential clients is very similar. Without clear expectations and mutual respect in relationships, your business will cease to scale.

Customer Service

Clients need to feel valued to have a future with your business, and that’s rooted in every interaction. Customer service is a broad term that is often miscategorized. In truth, every role is based on customer service, but many people go about it wrong by taking on the attitude of “It’s not my job.” Lack of ownership and willingness to serve customers in every capacity will undermine any long-term objectives your company may have. The good news is that with proper execution of these three concepts, you can focus on attaining your goals, and in the process, achieve levels of success you previously thought impossible. Don’t let your objectives for the new year fall by the wayside. Achieve those goals by rooting your business in organization, communication, and customer service. CLEAR CHOICES

3 OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST WINTER SPORT DESTINATIONS

Who’s Ready for Some Powder?

Where there are great mountains, there’s even better snow. The ski resort boasts five peaks, 187 trails, 34 lifts, four terrain parks, and a renowned cross-country trail. After a day on the slopes, head into the town of Breckenridge for dining and activities that ditch the glitz and glamour of Vail or Aspen and take you straight to the heart of fun. A destination that looks like a cross between a Nordic paradise and Olympic-level runs, Whistler is filled with true magic, winter activities, and a town that captivates the senses. When you see the mountains of British Columbia, you’ll understand why they hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics. The location’s beauty is only part of your stimulating experience, because every curve of fresh powder makes your pupils dilate. Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

Once you’re done flying down the hill where Bode Miller took the bronze, head over to the winter wonderland of the old Olympic Village for a cozy night in a picturesque town.

St. Anton, Austria

If you want a great location for next year’s Christmas card photo, there’s no better place than the Tyrolean Alps. Nestled in a valley between perfectly molded mountains, the Austrian landscape provides a beautiful backdrop for your winter excursions. The densely wooded areas and the bright reflection of the snow frame the vibrant town that’s just waiting to be explored. When you’re ready for world-class runs, hop in one of the 11 gondolas and zip down the hills that hosted the 2001 Alpine World Ski Championships.

The sound of the first carve
